Offer DescriptionIRTA is currently seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in Data Science, placing emphasis on technology-assisted data utilisation for animal health to join the Animal Health Program. The candidate will work in the project “Data-driven control and prioritisation of non-EU-regulated contagious animal diseases (DECIDE)” which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. We invite applications from ambitious candidates with relevant research experience and passion to conduct research and innovation activities mainly on the development of data-driven decision support tools to improve health and welfare management of pigs.Tasks and Responsibilities:
-Contribute to the high scientific and technological impact projects within the field of data science/epidemiology in collaboration with the group of endemic virus diseases, epidemiology and animal welfare.
-Retrieve laboratory, production and animal health and welfare data by conducting laboratory work and under field farming conditions so to develop a long-lasting professional interaction with farmers, integrators and stakeholders.-Conduct research work with biological samples from animals naturally infected with endemic pathogenic viral and bacterial agents, and to participate in lab and statistical analyses.
-Execute scientific and technical tasks and taking part in the planning and execution of the planned studies to ensure the achievement of milestones of research projects and contracts.
-Supervise the technical personnel and students that will support the research project.
-Perform literature review, data collection and management, involving statistical analysis.
-Collaborate in positioning the Program as a group of excellence through regular peer-reviewed publications, contributions at national and international congresses.
-Collaborate in fund rising activities through the preparation and submission of project proposals for public competitive calls and for contracts with the private sector, as well reporting process, such as writing progress and final reports of research activities.
-Contribute to the teamwork and team-spirit in the research line and in the Animal Health Program, fostering collaboration and integration activities.Required qualifications and experience:
-PhD in Health Science and/or Data Science, specifically in Veterinary and/or Animal Health and/or Epidemiology, Biomedical or Biotechnological sciences, or (Bio)Statics. Candidates with a proven set date for their PhD defense are also welcome.
-Knowledge on epidemiological data analysis.
-Proven experience in research skills: literature review, experimental design and implementation, data analysis, and scientific article writing.
-Dissemination skills: presentation/communication skills, and technical writing.Desirable requirements:
-Strong motivation to work with different types of data in an applied scientific scenario.
-Knowledge on endemic pig diseases.
-Programming (R and Python) and statistical data analysis skills.
-Knowledge on Machine Learning tools.
-Experience in supervising BSc and MSc students.
-Proven experience in public and private funding.Languages:
-Proficiency in English.
