Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.ABOUT THE RESEARCH GROUPThe Magnel-Vandepitte Laboratory at the Department of Structural Engineering and Building Materials of Ghent University is the largest Belgian research center in the field of concrete technology and concrete structures and has a vast and widely-spread international recognition. The research areas focus on different aspects of concrete structures, going from fundamental material research on microscopic and sub-microscopic scale to structural behaviour and structural reliability of concrete structures on large scale. The Magnel-Vandepitte Laboratory offers extensive experimental testing facilities and infrastructures, among which the large strong floor for executing load tests on large-scale elements is a unique instrument, next to having access to High Performance Computing infrastructure for computational research.SUMMARY OF THE RESEARCH TOPICThe design of steel fiber reinforced concrete structures is based on post-peak strength values that must be determined by testing. This represents a serious financial but also logistical burden that could be overcome by virtual testing through a successfully calibrated and validated computational framework. Within a 2-year research project an existing implementation of the Lattice Discrete Particle Model (LDPM) and its extension for steel fiber reinforced concrete (LDPM-F) will be critically checked against a large set of experimental data on different concretes and fiber types. Subsequently, several improvements to the discretization scheme and constitutive formulation will substantially improve the predictive capabilities of the framework with respect to mean response and predicted variability in parallel experiments.YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • Implement discretization schemes and constitutive models for fiber reinforced concrete
  • Calibrate meso-scale computational models to match macroscopic experimental data
  • Perform parameter and sensitivity studies
  • Run simulation on HPC systems

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Applicants should have a PhD in Structural or Mechanical Engineering.
  • You have an independent and well-organized working style, well-developed social skills directed towards working in an interdisciplinary team, strong motivation to succeed in scientific research, and excellent presentation and scientific writing
  • Excellent English language skills (verbally and written) and
  • Experience with computational mechanics and knowledge of object-oriented programming languages (ideally C++) for implementing improvements and extensions to an existing computational framework is a requirement.
  • Experience with meso-scale modelling of concrete and in particular fiber-reinforced concrete are a plus.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 2 years.
  • Your contract will start on 1/09/2024 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale PD1.
