  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • You assist in the purchasing process of two new laboratory testing setups (advanced triaxial and resonant column).
  • You conduct calibration and acceptance tests of the devices, aimed at verifying their working for cohesive samples. You connect with other international laboratories to learn about best practices for triaxial testing with bender elements and resonant column testing.
  • You contribute to the scoping of an onshore geotechnical survey aimed at obtaining samples for further analysis.
  • You interpret the results of CT scans on the samples to select specimens for further testing.
  • You conduct CU triaxial tests with bender elements and resonant column tests on selected samples of fissured clay, you report the results and draw conclusions on the effect of fissuring on the strength and stiffness of the clay.
  • You prepare guidance and training material for the technical staff to execute the triaxial tests and resonant column tests according to ASTM standards.
  • You communicate your research results in academic journals and scientific conferences.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate in geotechnical engineering (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma).
  • You are familiar with advanced geotechnical laboratory testing on clay soils. Experience with dynamic triaxial testing and resonant column testing is considered as an asset.
  • You understand the fundamental soil mechanics for stiff fissured clays and have an appreciation of the strain-dependence of shear stiffness.
  • You are a fluent communicator on technical topics and can have conversations with equipment manufacturers to ensure that laboratory testing equipment functions as specified.
  • You are willing to connect with other international laboratories to further improve your competences in advanced laboratory testing and you are willing to spend periods of 2 to 6 months at other international research institutes.
  • You can instruct technicians in a clear and respectful manner and are willing to learn from their practical expertise.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 3 years
  • Your contract will start on 1/10/2024 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale PD1.
