Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.YOUR TASKSAbout 90% of your assignment will be spent on research within an industrial context. In addition to the academic research, you can be involved in educational tasks related to the subject of your research. This vacancy aims to select a postdoctoral researcher having a materials (metals) engineering background. This researcher will experimentally focus on the role of hydrogen on the mechanical performance of metallic materials. Atomic hydrogen absorption followed by embrittlement can lead to the sudden and sometimes complete loss of the ductility of many high strength steels. Hydrogen embrittlement is among the most complex material decay and damage phenomena. Screening different materials towards their susceptibility to hydrogen degradation will be done by in-situ mechanical testing. Fractography microscopy analysis, together with determination of the specific hydrogen characteristics will be important as well (diffusion, trapping, solubility).WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a doctorate in Engineering, with a clear focus on environmental hydrogen degradation of metallic materials
  • Experience with electrochemical hydrogen characterization techniques in metals/steels (permeation, thermal desorption spectroscopy, hot extraction) is a clear asset.
  • Experience with mechanical characterization of hydrogen embrittlement in metals/steels is a clear asset.
  • Experience with advanced microstructural characterization techniques is a clear asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding on structure/property relationships and hydrogen embrittlement is an advantage.
  • You have a strong motivation for conducting scientific research and dealing with complex research questions.
  • You possess structured and creative problem-solving abilities, strong analytical and technical skills, critical scientific mindset and take responsibility for the development of your work.
