Offer DescriptionWe are pleased to announce an opening 3-years position for a postdoctoral researcher to join the HetCatFlow project under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Hermans within the multidisciplinary System Chemistry Team at IMDEA Nanociencia. The successful candidate will work on the implementation of a new method to performheterogeneous catalysis in continuous flow reactors by using flow reactors that do not have solid walls, but instead, have liquid walls due to magnetic confinement of an immiscible magnetic (ferro)fluid. This project falls within mathematical, physical, chemical, and engineering sciences (CMIFQ), focusing on developing new procedures for ensuring the energy efficiency of industrial processes, with the purpose of contributing to a greener, more efficient and sustainable industrial transition.Requirements/Background and skillsWe seek highly motivated and autonomous person with a PhD Degree in Chemical engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or related fields, and with a solid background in flow chemistry and hands-on experience in lab-scale prototyping, Excellent communication skills in English are a valuable asset. Main responsibilities of the candidate will include:

• Design, fabricate and optimize antitube flow reactors using manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing, water-jet cutting, and computer-numerical control (CNC), to optimize and test different antitube device geometries
• Characterize the mixing efficiency of reactors by UV-vis measurements, particle-tracking velocimetry (PTV) and X-ray imaging.
• Characterize reaction outcomes using classical offline chemical analysis: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) couple with liquid or gas chromatography (LC-MS, and GC-MS), infrared spectrometry (IR), and elemental analysis (EA).
• Develop both, heterogeneous acid catalysis and catalytic hydrogenation in an antitube reactor.

Description of the GroupThe selected candidate will join the System Chemistry Team at IMDEA Nanociencia, a young research group working at the interface of supramolecular chemistry and fluidics. We design chemical reaction networks that are used to control hydrogel materials, and we carry out reactions in microfluidic devices with application in flow chemistry. The group consists of ~10 researchers from all over the world (Europe, Asia, South-America, etc.) with a mixed chemistry, chemical engineering, and physics background, led by Prof. Thomas Hermans ( ).
