Job title:
Postdoctoral position (M/F) in numerical astrophysics – ExaSKAle Project
Company:
Job description
Offer DescriptionThe ExaSKAle project aims to develop numerical simulation tools for studying the Reionization epoch, and to produce models for interpreting observations of the intergalactic medium and the first galaxies during the first billion years of the Universe, whether with SKA (and its precursors) or JWST. The project is led by 2 teams from the Observatoire Astronomique de Strasbourg, D. Aubert (GALHECOs, P.I.) and P. Ocvirk (CDS, CoI), and is funded by the ANR for 2024-2028.At the end of the 48-month project, the aim will be to produce models that can predict the properties of large-scale IGM reionization and the sources of reionization in a single framework. This objective calls for the production of large volume, high-resolution simulations, which are demanding in terms of computing resources and must be able to use Exascale infrastructures. In this context, ExaSKAle is looking to recruit a post-doctoral fellow to help develop the DYABLO code, a new astrophysical simulation platform for Exascale machines, developed by the CEA and for which the Strasbourg Observatory contributes for its cosmological versions. Expected to be based in Strasbourg in the last quarter of 2025, this collaborator will support these development efforts to set up and produce large-scale reionization simulations. The collaborator will contribute to the implementation of modules allowing the DYABLO code to comply with the state of the art of reionization models. This mission will be carried out in collaboration with members of the DYABLO community for the inclusion of physical subgrid models (e.g. star formation, AGNs, feedback, chemistry), the improvement of code performance on hybrid architectures, or the implementation of analysis tools for large-scale simulations.
As such, the collaborator will need to have some experience on both aspects, numerical and astrophysical. The post-doctoral fellow will be part of the GALHECOS team at the Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory, and will work under the direction of D. Aubert, in collaboration with the other ExaSKAle members, O. Marchal (IR CNRS, GALHECOS) and P. Ocvirk (CDS).
The Observatoire Astronomique is a joint research unit of the CNRS and the University of Strasbourg, located at the heart of the city’s historic campus. It has a staff of around 100, including some 30 permanent scientists, working on the physics of galaxies, high-energy astrophysics and data science for astronomy. The ExaSKAle project has its own computing resources for development and analysis, including a state-of-the-art GPU server. It also has regular access to national and international computing resources. The collaborator will also have computing and financial resources. Missions or participation to conferences will be expected.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Astronomy Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Astronomy Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Astronomy Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages FRENCH Level BasicResearch Field Astronomy Years of Research Experience 1 – 4Research Field Astronomy » Astrophysics Years of Research Experience 1 – 4Research Field Astronomy » Cosmology Years of Research Experience 1 – 4Additional InformationEligibility criteriaThe collaborator will have a PhD in astrophysics and demonstrated experience in the manipulation and/or development of numerical tools for astrophysics.
