Supporting the transformation of industrial sites in their decarbonization is a major challenge for achieving the objectives of carbon neutrality by 2050. Three quarters of this industrial energy demand is in the form of heat, still mainly produced from fossil resources (this i.e. coal, natural gas and oil).The International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) strategy targets an increasing share of heat produced from electricity (i.e. by direct heating or via heat pump systems) , which must be around 15 to 40% by 2030 and around 65% in 2050 to meet industrial heat demands at low (
150°C) and medium temperatures (150°C-400°C). Therefore, the development and massive deployment of efficient heat pump systems are already encouraged to achieve the energy transition of industries towards decarbonization of their heat supply, in particular below 150°C for applications in industries such as chemicals, paper and agri-food. However, the expected massive electrification of different sectors of activity around 2035 (and in the decades to come) could lead, according to certain authors, to a crisis in electricity supply, particularly to meet the strong energy demand of giga-factories dedicated to the energy transition for local production of batteries and photovoltaic panels.

For these reasons, the HERCULE project aims to develop an innovative thermodynamic cycle capable of responding to the following challenges:· Societal issues: recovery of waste heat for carbon-free production of electricity or industrial heat according to needs and economic criteria;· Environmental issues: regulations on greenhouse gases;· Scientific challenges: flexible conversion systems with reversible operation, compact & efficient machines.The scientific and technological breakthrough proposed by the HERCULE project concerns the reversibility of the cycle: “power2heat”

“heat2power” for a more compact conversion system with lower CAPEX. By coupling with a CARNOT battery-type storage element, prospects can be investigated for energy efficiency and decarbonization of the industry.The objectives of the HERCULES project are:· Development of an innovative machine for the production of heat (
100°C) or electricity from waste heat sources, using natural fluids (GWP = 0) with the optimization of its architecture and components;· Targeted TRL = 4 with proof of concept in the laboratory.The studies to be carried out concern modeling, numerical simulations as well as the development of the prototype and the performance measurements and analysis. The laboratory’s experienced technical team will support the postdoctoral researcher particularly for the experimental studies.Profil du candidatYou should hold a PhD in Thermal Science or Thermal Energy. We are hiring a motivated PhD with well-developed scientific skills and strong knowledge in modelling, simulation, data analysis and experimental setup. Prior experience in thermodynamic systems would be appreciated. The ability to work efficiently as part of a team and to perform both self-directed and guided research are required.
