Postdoctoral position in applied instrumentation (M/F)
Offer DescriptionIn the framework of the Horizon Europe Project OCEAN:ICE we are looking for an engineer for finalizing the development of a novel optical sensor for in situ water isotope measurements. The instrument is under development by the team at IGE, and is based on an infrared Optical Feedback Cavity Enhanced Optical Spectrometer (OFCEAS) coupled with a membrane extraction system. This unique sensor is capable of precise isotope measurements (D, 18O, 17O) of the water pervaporating the membrane. After a field campaign conducted at Fimbul iceshelf (East Antarctica) during the Austral summer of 2023/2024, few improvements of the instrument are required (better mechanical stability, robustness and system automation) and will be conducted in the frame of this work.– Learning the operation of the sensor, training in its optimization and adjustment.
– Diagnosing faults and suggesting improvements or modifications
– Calibration of the instrument in the laboratory
– Field test campaigns in real conditions conducted at Lake Geneva.
– Data analysis and reporting of results. The project aims to study the freshwater cycle and better understand the processes involved in the melting of the ice-shelves in Antarctica. The project is part of the research activities of the ICE3 team (Cores, Climate, Chemistry) in collaboration with the team CryoDyn (Glaciers and ice sheets dynamics) and MEOM (Multiscale oceanic flow modeling) at IGE and with LOCEAN (Paris), BAS and University of St. Andrews (UK), Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI, Norway), University of Gothenburg (UGOT, Sweeden), AWI (Germany) and others partners of the OCEAN:ICE project. More information about the project structure can be found here:
The engineer will work in a team developing optical instrumentation for Geoscience application lead by R. Grilli. The Institute of Geosciences of the Environment IGE is a joint research unit (CNRS, INRAE, IRD, UGA, Grenoble INP) hosted on the campus of St Martin d’Hères near Grenoble and is part of the Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers de Grenoble (OSUG). The IGE studies climate, the functioning of the planet and its evolution in terms of pollution, global changes and risks for societies. Historically, the IGE conducts its research in regions with significant societal and environmental issues: the polar regions, the intertropical zone, and mountain regions.
The average number of staff member in the laboratory is about 330, including 190 permanent members (researchers, teacher-researchers, engineers, technicians and administrative staff) and about 140 doctoral students, post-doctoral students and staff on fixed-term contracts. Each year, the laboratory welcomes about 120 trainees and scientific visitors. The IGE is housed in four buildings on the Grenoble University Campus (Glaciology building, OSUG-B, Maison Climat Planète and INRAE-Grenoble Saint Martin d’Hères).
Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers de Grenoble (OSUG) ensures compliance with the Commission Recommendation 2005/251/EC of 11 March 2005 on the European Charter for Researchers and on a Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (OJ L 75, 22.3.2005, p. 67).
