Postdoc Strain Monitoring using Dynamic Fibre-optic Field Data
TU Delft
Modelling, acqusition, procesing and inversion of fibre-optic seismic data in shallow boreholes.Job description
We are excited to offer a unique postdoctoral position within the Q-fibre project, an innovative initiative aimed at developing a cutting-edge monitoring and characterization toolbox for ensuring CO2 storage integrity. By leveraging fibre-optic data from wells—both active and abandoned—this project will help storage operators better understand the complex interactions between thermo-hydro-mechanical strains near wells and ensure the safe management of CO2 storage sites. In this role, your focus will be on Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), using dynamic-strain measurements. You’ll work primarily on a well located on the TU Delft campus, monitoring shallow geothermal storage, with the results contributing directly to the Q-fibre project’s broader toolbox. You will also apply the developed tools to well data from a project partner, expanding the impact of your work. This postdoctoral position has two key components: * Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI): You’ll conduct a modeling study to assess the feasibility of using FWI on DAS data collected with an active source at the surface (Vertical Seismic Profile, VSP). Your work will involve optimizing an FWI scheme, initially focusing on transmitted waves and later incorporating reflection data. The next step will be performing VSP measurements on the TU Delft campus and applying the optimized inversion scheme.
We are seeking a driven, collaborative researcher with a background in geophysics and a passion for innovative seismic monitoring techniques. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on pioneering research with real-world applications, contributing to the development of sustainable energy solutions. If you are eager to take on this challenge and make a significant impact with an innovatie an supporteive team, we encourage you to apply.Job requirements
We are looking for a motivated and talented candidate with a PhD in Applied Geoscience or Engineering, specializing in Applied Geophysics. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of geophysical research, applying advanced numerical and programming skills to solve both forward and inverse problems. Experience with real-world data is an advantage, though not essential. The ideal candidate is a quick learner with a wide-ranging curiosity and a collaborative spirit. Strong communication skills are crucial, as you’ll be working closely with a diverse team and sharing complex ideas clearly. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is essential for success in this role..TU Delft (Delft University of Technology)
