Postdoc position in laboratory astrochemistry at ICMM-CSIC
Offer DescriptionThe Institute of Materials Science of Madrid ( ) is a research institute under the Spanish Research Council (CSIC). It is situated and belongs to the International Excellence Campus Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM)-CSIC, in a privileged area on the outskirts of Madrid, surrounded by other research institutes. ICMM comprises over 300 researchers and staff members and conducts both theoretical and experimental research in all fields of Physics and Chemistry through nearly 30 research teams. The postdoctoral researcher will join the ESISNA group, headed by Prof. Dr. José Ángel Martín Gago, which, among other research activities, is devoted to laboratory astrochemistry to unveil the formation of cosmic dust and complex organic molecules using nanoscience approaches. ESISNA hosts the STARDUST machine, a worldwide unique experimental facility designed and built within the ERC-Synergy project . STARSDUST is dedicated to mimic in the laboratory the conditions of evolved stars and is able to simulate all the journey of cosmic dust from its formation in dying stars to its processing in the interstellar medium and dense molecular clouds. The postdoctoral researcher will be in charge of the astrochemistry related research activities of ESISNA and will work under the supervision of Dr. Gonzalo Santoro and Prof. Dr. José Ángel Martín-Gago. The postdoc tasks will include, among others: 1. The fabrication, characterization and analysis of cosmic dust analogues, both silicates and carbonaceous, incorporating transition metal atoms. 2. The processing, characterization and analysis of molecular ices deposited on the cosmic dust analogues for studying the catalytic activity of dust grains on the chemistry of molecular ices. The outcome of the research will be of high-relevance to understand the physico-chemical processes that lead to the chemical complexity observed in space. Collaborations with astronomers are well established and ongoing (Prof. Dr. José Cernicharo, Institute of Fundamental Physics-CSIC; Dr. Anibal García-Hernandez, Astrophysics Institute of Canarias).
