Offer DescriptionOffer DescriptionWe are seeking a talented and motivated PhD candidate or postdoctoral researcher to lead controlled ice-growth experiments aimed at understanding how microorganisms colonize sea ice and how their adaptations impact brine rejection during ice formation.Project description and aimThis research is part of the HFSP-funded project ‘Trapped in Ice’ ( ), which aims to explore the physical and biochemical mechanisms driving the colonization of sea ice by microorganisms, as well as the physiological adaptations that enable their survival. As a key member of this interdisciplinary team, you will integrate a novel imaging method developed in François Fripiat’s Lab (Middleton et al., doi:1.1017/jog.2015.1) with expertise from Marcel Babin’s Lab (Laval University, Canada) and Manu Prakash’s Lab (Stanford University, USA), focusing on cell imaging techniques. This collaboration offers an exciting opportunity to investigate microalgal colonization of sea-ice brine inclusions, from single-cell behavior to the dynamics of spatially organized algal communities. Additionally, you will explore the role of ice-active molecules, such as Ice Binding Proteins (IBPs) and polysaccharide-rich Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS), on sea-ice microstructure and desalination processes. This position involves close collaboration with international research groups and extended stays at partner institutions, including several months at Laval University (Canada).
