Postdoc (M/F): Experimental study of (bio)fuels ageing in microreactors

Job description

Offer DescriptionContext: Several transport sectors, such as aviation and road freight, rely on combustion engines that are very difficult, if not impossible, to replace with electric power. Yet these sectors are major sources of greenhouse gases. For example, in a “business as usual” scenario, the global aviation sector would have to multiply its current CO2 emissions by a factor of 4, in just 30 years. Sustainable fuels produced from biomass (biofuels), which are operational in today’s engines, are a prime solution for reducing the carbon footprint of these sectors. However, the low resistance of biofuels to liquid-phase oxidation, which is the main cause of ageing, is a major problem that prevents, for example, their direct use in engines. Aging alters the composition of biofuels, leading to cocktail effects that modify their physical properties, neutralize antioxidants and ultimately create harmful combustion pollutants. As part of the European “BioSCOPE” project, the candidate will develop experiments to study these cocktail effects.
Objective: The candidate will develop analytical tools to study the aging of liquid biofuels produced in a microreactor. Methods will be developed to monitor aging kinetics using Raman spectroscopy, HPLC, with analyses of separated fractions, and GC-MS. The development of chemometric methods will also be explored. Different molecules from each family of biofuels and new-generation antioxidants will be studied in model aviation and diesel fuels.Candidate’s main tasks :
– Bibliographical work,
– Supervision of analytical tool development (Raman, HPLC, GC-MS),
– Development and analysis of experimental kinetic databases for various biofuels,
– Writing of scientific articles and dissemination of research results at conferences and seminars. The Laboratoire Réactions et Génie des Procédés (LRGP) is a joint research unit of the CNRS and the Université de Lorraine. It is located in Nancy, France’s second-largest student city. It is mainly located in the city center, on the premises of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Industries Chimiques de Nancy (ENSIC). The research laboratory is a leading chemical and process engineering laboratory in France and worldwide (18 CNRS researchers, 82 teacher-researchers, 43 technical and administrative staff and 180 non-permanent staff: contract researchers, PhD students, post-docs and master’s students). The Radical Kinetics group is part of the laboratory, with internationally recognized expertise in combustion kinetics, both experimentally and in modeling. Existing experimental set-ups to study these phenomena include shock tube, laminar flame and perfectly stirred reactor experiments. The post-doctoral program is part of the ERC Consolidator project “BioSCOPE”. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join a multidisciplinary group of 7 PhD students and 4 permanent academic researchers working in the fields of energy and the environment. Research projects funded by the ERC, ANR and industry cover topics such as thermochemical conversion of biomass, safety in the incineration of pesticides or solid plastic waste, battery fire safety, pollutants formed in engines and hypersonic propulsion.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Engineering Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Chemistry Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Physics Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages FRENCH Level BasicResearch Field Engineering Years of Research Experience NoneResearch Field Chemistry Years of Research Experience NoneResearch Field Physics Years of Research Experience NoneAdditional InformationEligibility criteriaWe are looking for a highly motivated student who will be fully involved in a challenging multidisciplinary project involving micro-fluidics, chemical kinetics, spectroscopy and the chemistry of oxidation and combustion.
