Copenhagen Business School (CBS) invites applications for a postdoc in governance of natural resources and sustainability for a just and fair energy transition.The vacant position forms part of the research project ‘Frontiers of natural resource and sustainability governance for a just energy transition’ (FRONTIERS), located at the Department of Management, Society and Communication (MSC).At an overall level, FRONTIERS aims to advance knowledge for a just and fair transition, which involves and respects those (such as communities or people) who are at risk or in practice adversely affected by mining of minerals for the green transition. Comprising four complementary work packages and a focus on land-based and potential deep-sea mining as a field of natural resource exploration, the project explores effects of risk-based due diligence demands for the industry; industry and investors practices; and potentially complementary normative ideas related to the rights of nature. Ultimately, the project seeks to develop insights that may support a comprehensive assessment of eco-system impacts as an aspect of risk-based due diligence for mining of minerals for the transition and investments in the industry and the value chain, including the solar and wind power and energy
storage industries. Some fieldwork in mining countries and/or with relevant industries is envisaged. Please see for details.MSC brings together scholars from a range of research areas within governance, management, communication and the broader social sciences and humanities, studying organizations in global environments and the interaction and interdependencies of business, society and government. Information about the department may be found at .MSC is a significant supplier of research-based teaching to a broad portfolio of programmes, which include undergraduate, graduate and doctoral teaching and supervision as well as executive education.The vacant position is non-tenured, covering a 2-year period with research obligations and no teaching obligation. To fulfill the research requirements of the position, the candidate selected for the job is expected to be physically present at MSC in Copenhagen on a regular basis and actively participate in the research activities of the FRONTIERS project and the Department.Within the overall focus of the FRONTIERS project, examples of research areas that the Postdoc’s research may target, include but are not limited to:

  • Social and environmental impacts of land-based and/or sea-based mining of minerals for the transition
  • Good practices around responsible business conduct and risk-based due diligence for natural resource use related to the transition
  • Meaningful stakeholder engagement, including for ‘more-than-human’ and ecosystemic subjects, such as the ocean, forests or nature more generally
  • Actors and processes that are conducive to transmitting good practices across organisations, sectors and regions

The Postdoc is expected to collaborate closely with the overall FRONTIERS team. Within the research project defined by the Postdoc, the elected candidate is expected to engage with diverse project-related tasks, such as literature synthesis, writing up of empirical studies, undertaking fieldwork, and collaboration with academic and practitioner partners and the wider scientific community. The position also involves minimal administrative tasks related to the research activities, such as planning and organizing of academic workshops.Qualifications
i. The applicant must hold a PhD or equivalent. In assessing applications, particular emphasis will be placed on research potential and research relevant to the job description. We welcome applicants with diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the social and human sciences, such as business and management studies; law and socio-legal studies; political science; sociology; or anthropology. In addition to a social science background, studies or experience within mining, geology, geography, environmental studies and/or ocean biology can be a beneficial asset.
ii. Previous experience in field work, research project management and ability to work with diverse sets of stakeholders, including in and around mining, are considered assets.
iii. Willingness live in Denmark (and to move to Denmark, if relevant).
iv.The applicant must have professional proficiency in English (written and spoken).   • Information indicating experience in fieldwork for research, research management, research-oriented interaction with industry or industry-affected communities, and international research collaboration.
  • Documentation of relevant, significant, original research at an international level.
