University of Edinburgh
Job description
Job DescriptionGrade UE07 £39,347- £46,974 per annumCSE- GeoSciencesFull-Time 35 hours per weekFixed term for 16 monthsThe Opportunity:We are seeking an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate to carry out modelling and analysis of ice loss and estimates of glacier thickness using the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM) and Factorial Snow Model (FSM) as part of the NERC Highlight Topics project The Big ThawThe Big Thaw aims to:
- Improve measurements and modelling of seasonal snow in high-mountain regions
- Understand timescales and potential trajectories for change for existing glacier ice, snow and meltwater resources
- Determine frequency of extreme wet and dry years in the mountain cryosphere, and what climate factors cause these
This post is full-time (35 hours per week), however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns. We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working. The Big Thaw will make use of a range of modelling and in-situ fieldwork activities. The role of this post is to
- develop an effective coupling and calibration strategy using FSM to determine the surface mass balance and runoff of high-mountain glaciers,
- deploy this strategy in targeted regions where fieldwork and regional climate modelling is being carried out
- interface with the climate modellers who will provide meteorological inputs for the coupled model and with the hydrological modellers who will use glacier coverage and runoff as inputs
You will join a team of investigators in the Schools of GeoScience in the University of Edinburgh, with expertise in ice-sheet, glacier, and climate modelling. We seek candidates with a PhD (or nearing completion) in global glacier modelling or computational geoscience. Extensive knowledge of Python is essential, and detailed experience developing within OGGM is highly desirable. We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender or ethnic group. Appointment will be based on merit alone. To support your application, please provide a CV and a Cover letter please.Your Skills and Attributes for Success:

Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally.About the TeamThe School of GeoSciences explores the factors and forces that shape our world. The School aims to understand the world through fundamental curiosity-driven research and to support prescient decision-making at individual to global scales. We undertake world-leading research; offer new ways of understanding natural and social drivers of change; provide inter-and trans-disciplinary solutions; and work in partnership to improve livelihoods and explore ways to manage the environment that are both sustainable and socially equitable. With over 500 academics, researchers and research students, we are the largest and most successful interdisciplinary grouping of geoscientists and geographers in the UK. Research activity is coordinated within three main Research Institutes – Global Change, Earth and Planetary Science, and Geography and the Lived Environment – and within smaller research groupings that reach across and beyond the School.A distinctive feature of the School is the combination of academic strength, intellectual breadth and societal relevance. Our interdisciplinary research and teaching builds on established core disciplines (ecology, environmental sciences, geography, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography) to provide a variety of approaches to understanding the world (including, for example, system-scale modelling, process studies and the development of urban and social theory). The School’s research covers fundamental ‘blue-skies’ questions, as well as having application to key societal challenges including inequality and vulnerability; urban precarity; nature and cultural meaning; development and sustainability; climate and environmental change; energy, food and water security; health and wellbeing; natural resources; and natural hazards. The School holds a Bronze Athena SWAN award in recognition of our commitment to gender equality in higher education.
