Job title:

Post-doctoral Position on Dual-comb Spectroscopy Using Coherent Soliton Sources

Company:

Job description

Offer DescriptionThe Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in experimental nonlinear optics. This position is part of the recently funded ERC project HIGHRES, which aims to advance dual-comb spectroscopy and ranging by overcoming current trade-offs between resolution and acquisition time.Specifically, we will implement a novel approach to overcome this limitation. We aim to develop a dual-comb source with unprecedented characteristics by leveraging soliton formation in driven fiber resonators [1,2]. The main objective is a proof-of-concept demonstration of coherent dual comb spectroscopy [3].Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of two soliton-based mutually coherent fiber frequency combs.
  • Perform experiments to apply these sources to coherent dual-comb spectroscopy.
  • Work independently and contribute to the supervision of PhD students.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team at the OPERA-photonics group, benefiting from expertise in both experimental and theoretical nonlinear optics.

Candidate Profile:
We are looking for a motivated researcher with:

  • A PhD in nonlinear optics, photonics, or a related field (obtained within the last 8 years).
  • A strong track record of publications in nonlinear optics.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

How to Apply:
Please send the following documents to François Leo ( ): * A CV highlighting relevant experience and publications.

  • A cover letter explaining how you envision contributing to the HIGHRES project, specifically addressing:
  • Your approach to building mutually coherent soliton-based sources.
  • How your expertise aligns with the goals of HIGHRES.
  • Any innovative ideas you may bring to the project.

Applications that demonstrate a strong understanding of the project and its objectives will be prioritized.Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must have spent less than one year in Belgium over the past three years.

A 82, 043817 (2010).Project abstract :Spectroscopy and metrology are amongst the most important applications of electromagnetic fields. The

very fast oscillations of light (up to 200 THz in the infrared) permit very precise distance measurements, aswell as broadband analysis of radiations emitted and absorbed by matter. The technologies have evolvedtremendously over the years and, at the turn of the century, a ground-breaking technology was proposed. Byusing two sources of optical pulse trains (corresponding to optical frequency combs in the spectral domain),no moving parts would be required, and much faster measurements could be performed. So-called dual combspectroscopy and ranging have had a very significant impact on their respective fields and have establishedstate of the art capabilities in terms of speed and accuracy that are still relevant today. Yet some importantlimitations remain. Most importantly, there is a trade-off between resolution an acquisition time which iscurrently treated as a fundamental limit of dual comb systems. It prevents these systems from being used forhigh resolution spectroscopy or long-distance ranging, which are critical for some applications such as gassensing or large-scale metrology. In HIGHRES, I propose a novel technique which would allow overcomingthis fundamental limit. I expect it will improve the current state of the art by as much as three orders ofmagnitude in terms of resolution (or distance). My team will start by a theoretical analysis of the generalprinciple I propose. We will then build a dual comb source with unprecedented characteristics based onsoliton formation in driven fibre resonators. Finally, using this novel source, we will experimentallydemonstrate two proof of principle applications which would greatly benefit from this novel technique, namely THz spectroscopy and very long-distance ranging.Where to apply E-mailfrancois.leo@ulb.beRequirementsResearch Field Physics » Optics Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages ENGLISH Level ExcellentAdditional InformationWork Location(s)Number of offers available 1 Company/Institute Universite libre de Bruxelles, CP194/5 Country Belgium GeofieldContact CityBruxelles WebsiteStreetAvenue FD Roosevelt, 50 Postal Code1050 Phone026502802STATUS: EXPIREDShare this page
