Job description

Offer DescriptionHosting Laboratory: Universite’ Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium; at the Laboratoire G-Time (Geochemistry & Geophysics: Tephra, Isotopes, Minerals and Earthquakes) (N. Mattielli). In close collaboration with the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (A. Mangold), KULeuven (N. Van Lipzig), UGent (Ch. Walgraeve).Subject title: Pathways of particles, VOCs and moisture into East-Antarctica in a changing climate (PASPARTOUT)Research Area: East Antarctica; Geochemical characterization of aerosols in surface snowJob position: 1 Postdoctoral positionDescription of the project:The atmospheric circulation, water cycle and cloud-aerosol-interactions are recognized as key elements of the Antarctic climate system by several international consortia (JPI climate & IPCC). Clouds and aerosols play a significant role in the radiative energy budget and aerosols impact cloud microphysics because they are cloud condensation and ice nuclei (CCN, INP). Further, Antarctica being the most pristine region on Earth, is not only a key region for the evolution of the future global climate, but also very sensitive to a changing climate.Within the framework of a collaborative research program PASPARTOUT (funded by Belgian Research Action Through Interdisciplinary Networks – BELSPO), Lab. G-Time from ULB seeks for a candidate (postdoctoral fellow) for an in-depth geochemical (major, trace elements and isotopes) study of modern dust depositions in the East Antarctica. The main objective aims to identify the dust provenance and the apportionment of the dust potential source areas according to the seasons, and implications on atmospheric circulations and environmental impacts in the Southern Hemisphere. The candidate will have the opportunity to join the scientist team for field works in East Antarctica (sector close to the Belgian Princess Elisabeth Station).Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Geosciences » Geology Education Level PhD or equivalentSkills/QualificationsThe candidate will have experience in geochemistry (elemental and/or isotopic) and in atmospheric sciences or glaciology.
The candidate will enjoy working in a laboratory environment, with a rigorous and critical approach; he/she will also enjoy carrying out fieldwork in sometimes difficult conditions. He/she will be efficient in compiling results, carefully interpreting them and publishing them in international peer-reviewed journals.Specific RequirementsThe initial hiring is for a one-year period (grants from BELSPO) and can be extended through other calls. For pursuing the project, the potential candidate will apply to the national funding agency (FNRS) – ideally in January 2025 for a postdoctoral fellowship extension. The position can be open in October 2024.
