Employment within the research project “Design of multidentate surface bonding groups as a strategy for controlling stability and conductivity of organic monolayers on metals” funded by a National Science Centre (NCN).Project description: To power organic circuits and to make them compatible with other devices, we must at some point connect them to metals. This connection is not trivial when it comes to the physical aspects of the organic-inorganic interface and for nanotechnology-based applications becomes a very important part of a given device. Organic monolayers such as SAMs (Self-Assembled Monolayers) naturally create such an interface on the nanometer scale and are considered a model system for molecular/organic electronics. So far, most SAMs research and applications rely on using a single sulfur atom to anchor molecules to metals. In the current project, we will investigate the effect of bidentate and tridentate binding of molecules to a metal substrate as a method to increase stability control (thermal, chemical, and towards electron beam irradiation) of SAMs that exhibit both high and low electrical conductivity. So far, research on multidentate bonds in SAMs has focused mainly on the influence of different numbers of sulfur atoms anchoring the molecules on the gold substrate. In the current project, we propose a systematic analysis of aromatic and aliphatic SAMs based on the use of different types of bonding geometries formed by -SH and -COOH groups on Au and Ag to focus our analysis on the effect of the bond between the anchor group and the rest of the molecule on crystallinity, stability and conductivity of respective monolayers. This new approach builds on our recent experiments, which indicate that these largely unexplored parameters have a key impact on SAMs stability. The main goal of this project is therefore to combine careful anchor group design with stability optimization of selected monolayer types to design conductive and insulating SAMs suitable for predefined applications.Scope of dutiesaccording to the Annex 1 to the Work Regulations of the Jagiellonian University – Model scopes of responsibilities and duties of academic teachers
