Job description

Offer DescriptionTitle:Offer Description:We are looking for a motivated Post Doc research to develop a process for the upcycling of EoL NdFeB magnets from HDDs, managing to create novel, inclusive and democratic business models, with social benefits in all population sectors. The PostDoc research work will be performed at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) (Barcelona, Spain) within the Department of Chemical Engineering, under the supervision of professors J.L. Cortina and E. Guillen. More specifically, the candidate will join the “Resource Recovery and Environmental Management – (R2EM)” research group, which has a vast experience in both membrane processes and recovery schemes.Currently, there is no market for EoL NdFeB magnets due to the lack of sustainable processes that integrate zero-waste and circular economy approaches. In this scenario, the upcycling of the EoL magnets turns to be the best available option, thus developing a sustainable process able to valorise the entire magnet in other applications, where the quality required for the products can be reached, respecting the planetary boundaries, and decreasing the use of primary raw materials. Upcycling of Nd-based magnets is scarcely documented, therefore the innovation potential in this area is yet to be exploited. The work to be done will be centred on the recovery of boron from NdFeM magnets. The Fe/B mixture obtained after the electrochemical Nd extraction process will be processed for the individual Fe and B recovery. As the expected level of B in the magnets is
2%, its contents in the leaching solutions will below 1 g/L and a concentration stage using ion-exchange and L-L extraction will be also carried out. After that, recovered solutions in acidic media will be purified using electro-membrane processes to produce rich H3BO3 solutions.Where to apply E-mail[email protected]RequirementsResearch Field Engineering » Chemical engineering Education Level PhD or equivalentSkills/Qualifications
