Offer DescriptionThe Post Doc will develop upon a numerical model of progressive rock sub-critical cracking within the ERC Adv. Grant “Crack the Rock”. He will also optionally contribute to perform high performance computing solutions for large seismic data bases, and to numerical solution to simulate wave propagation in complex material and perform wave imaging inversion problems.The candidate will review existing numerical model to simulate cracking, at the atomistic scale and at the meso-scale. He will work on an existing mechanical scheme that simulate at the mesoscopic scale the development of thermally activated damage in heterogeneous solid materials under constant load.
The candidate will develop:
– an explicit time-domain solution and
– various time-dependent loadings, including cyclical ones,
– average temperature changes solutions.
The candidate will additionally, and optionally, conduct research in one or more of the following domains:
– atomistic numerical models;
– background seismic noise large data base HPC, passive imaging and passive monitoring;
– direct and Inverse wave propagation problems in imaging with acoustic or seismic waves, including direct, reflected and multiply scattered waves.
The candidate will also write scientific articles in international peer reviewed journals (in English), and, if needed, operational reports that can be necessary to other team members. Codes will be documented and written following international software engineering standards.

It is part of the Observatory of Sciences of the Universe of Grenoble (OSUG) and of the PAGE research center of the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA). Its workforce is approximately 300 people for an average annual budget of €7 million.
It is organized around 9 research and service teams, the scientific objective being the physical and chemical study of planet Earth, particularly by focusing on the couplings between observations of natural objects, experimentation and modeling. associated complex processes.
ISTerre also provides solid Earth observation missions, hosts and maintains national parks of geophysical instruments, as well as a data center.
The recruited person will join the Fault Mechanics team, within the ERC Crack the Rock Adv. Grant project. The project work team is made up of 1 PI and 3 researchers, 2-3 PhD students, and 1-2 post-doc, 1-2 engineers and 1-2 trainees.
