Job description

Offer DescriptionDue to the gravitational forces exerted on Earth, life has evolved in an environment characterized by recurrent but predictable changes. Most living organisms anticipate the rhythmic cycles of the environment through molecular clocks, providing them with an adaptive advantage. Brown algae (Phaeophyceae) are photosynthetic macro-organisms of critical ecological importance for coastal ecosystems. They are part of the stramenopiles and have evolved independently from other major eukaryotic lineages such as animals or land plants for at least a billion years. This unique evolutionary history has been associated with the emergence of many remarkable features. Reproduction (gamete release) in the brown alga Dictyota dichotoma is synchronized by a lunar molecular clock; however, little is known about its functioning. The light during full moon nights is the environmental factor that conditions these fertilization rhythms. Studying the moonlight photoreceptors represents an obvious entry point to understanding the composition of the clocks. In this context, this project aims to elucidate the mechanisms of lunar light perception and its implications for the synchronization of tide-related biological rhythms in brown algae. The data produced by this project will provide insights into the functioning of moon-related rhythms in brown algae, potentially linking fundamental knowledge to biotechnological innovations. The specific objectives of this project are, firstly, to identify candidate photoreceptors through photobiology experiments, as well as through the study of transcriptome data and phylogenetic analyses. Secondly, the postdoctoral researcher will demonstrate the involvement of several photoreceptors in the synchronization of the circalunar rhythms of Dictyota by generating mutant lines of the candidate genes. In parallel, protein-protein interaction screens (yeast two-hybrid) and biochemical studies will be conducted to investigate both the quality and intensity of the light spectrum capable of exciting the photoreceptor, as well as its interaction network. The contract will be carried out under the supervision of Dr. Andrés Ritter in the Tidal Rhythms of Algae group (Unit “Laboratory of Integrative Biology of Marine Models”, UMR8227) at the Station Biologique de Roscoff. The host institute, the Station Biologique de Roscoff, is a research center in marine biology and oceanography located in the city of Roscoff on the beautiful northern coast of Brittany.
