Offer DescriptionThe CNRS/IN2P3 is offering a young postdoctoral position (
3 years of experience) with a contract 2 years in the field of astro-particle physics. The postdoc will join the Centre de Physique des Particules de Marseille (CPPM). She/he will participate in the KM3NeT Collaboration and the Lactel project.The development of the technique of Water Cherenkov Detector Arrays (WCDA) has recently revolutionized our knowledge of the gamma-ray sky in the multi-TeV energy range (e.g. HAWK). WCDAs use the Earth atmosphere and a horizontal array of light sensors (large photo- multiplier tubes, PMT) immersed at a shallow depth (
5 m) in water (tanks, pond, lake) to detect cosmic ray induced Extensive Air Showers (EAS) of high-energy particles. Charged EAS particles (electrons, positrons, muons, hadrons) penetrating in water emit Cherenkov light if they move with the speed faster than the speed of light in the medium. Steradian wide field-of-view WCDA observations allow to continuously monitor large portions of the sky and in this sense, they are complementary to the observations Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) systems, like the next-generation observatory Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), that provide higher sensitivity but within narrower field-of-view.
The objective of the Lactel project is to demonstrate the feasibility of improving the suppression of the proton and atomic nuclei EAS background with a novel type of WCDA thus opening the way for the measurement of the electron spectrum above 10 TeV and improvement of sensitivity of gamma-ray observations in this energy range. To this end, optical modules of the ANTARES neutrino telescope, that has recently finished data taking in the Mediterranean Sea, will be reused and installed in Lake Geneva. This is also in the spirit of sustainable science.
The neutrino group of CPPM is having a leading role in the construction and exploitation of the ANTARES and KM3NeT neutrino telescopes for more than 20 years. Among the neutrino group at CPPM, the postdoc researcher will work on selecting and requalifying ANTARES optical modules for reuse in the Lactel project. He/she will also participate into integration, deployment, data taking and data analysis of the Lactel detector. Time permitting, he/she will also participate into the activities and data analysis of the KM3NeT/ORCA neutrino detector.The postdoc will be responsible to setup a dark box test facility for photomultipliers. Further, he/she will have to select a subset of ANTARES optical modules from large pool of such modules which are still available after the dismantling of the ANTARES detector in 2022. This will be followed by re-qualifying, characterizing and finally choosing some of these optical modules to be used in the Lactel project. He/she will then contribute to the integration of these optical modules into the detector and help with deployment and data taking campaigns in Lake Geneva close to Lausanne. The postdoc will also contribute to the activity of data analysis related to the Lactel project.
Time permitting, the candidate is also invited to participate in the data taking activites of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector and in the analysis of atmospheric neutrino data to extract informations about neutrino oscillations from it.Located in the heart of the Parc National des Calanques, on the Luminy campus, the CPPM is a joint research laboratory of the CNRS and Aix-Marseille University, with around 180 researchers, engineers and PhD students. The laboratory studies subjects ranging from particle physics to astroparticle physics and cosmology, with a strong technological focus on electronics, mechanics, instrumentation and computing, enabling the design and construction of cutting-edge detection systems, often called upon to operate under extreme conditions: in the depths of the sea, in space or underground.
