Picture editor, Style – MAT cover

The Sunday Times Style magazine is looking for a picture editor for a maternity cover contract.

The picture editor will work collaboratively with senior editors, designers and sub-editors to produce Style on multiple platforms.

The successful candidate will be an experienced picture editor or senior picture researcher for a national newspaper or magazine with excellent contacts. You will have a strong interest in fashion and current affairs and you will be able to demonstrate your visual creativity and your spark for storytelling.

Responsibilities

  • Pitching creative ideas to senior editors and providing alternative ideas where appropriate

  • Partnering with the social media and audience engagement teams to produce engaging social media picture packages

  • Investigating suitable exclusive content ideas or picture-led stories, including archive content

  • Having a clear understanding of the editorial and visual objectives of Style magazine

  • Ensuring that forward planning is managed effectively, especially for major events or exclusive stories on social media platforms and our website

  • Commissioning photographers to produce distinctive images for digital and print picture packages

  • Managing relationships with agencies and other external contacts to source or commission pictures as cost-efficiently as possible

  • Ensuring all pictures published are editorially compliant and appropriately attributed

  • Managing good working relationships with editors and production colleagues

  • Manage the pictures budget for Style ensuring resources are used efficiently.

Skills and experience

  • A qualification or strong experience in journalism or photography

  • Experience working in the media at a newspaper, magazine or website or for a picture agency

  • Demonstrable interest in fashion, celebrity, beauty, interiors and current affairs

  • Strong understanding of social media platforms and how they can engage our existing audience and drive new subscribers to The Sunday Times

  • Able to integrate audience data and adapt picture stories accordingly

  • Experience establishing strong working relationships and building credibility with senior managers

  • Creative problem-solving

  • Highly organised and able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment

  • A collaborative, flexible working style with experience working in partnership with design and production

  • Strong understanding of usage rights, permissions and copyright

We offer a flexible working arrangement where employees are expected to be in the office a minimum of three days per week. For the remaining two days, there is the option to work remotely if desired.
