PhD Thesis Student (f/m) on ID16B in the X-ray nano-probe group and the SIMAP laboratory at the UGA
European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
Context & Job descriptionThesis subject : Synchrotron nano-imaging informed tailoring of additive manufacturing microstructures against strain localizationBeamline ID16B is dedicated to hard X-ray nano-analysis, combining X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and 3D/4D X-ray nano-imaging (nano-CT) techniques. The instrument enables world-leading research across a wide range of scientific disciplines such as earth and environmental science, life science and materials science. ID16B is exploiting a wide energy range from 6 to 33 keV while routinely providing beamsizes down to 50 nm. It can accommodate sample environments (furnace, cryostat, electrochemical cells…) providing unique in situ nano-analysis capabilities. You will join a collaboration between the ESRF and the SIMAP laboratory from the University Grenoble Alpes to tailor additive manufacturing microstructures against strain localization. You will design different microstructures of aluminum alloys by L-PBF and conduct in situ 3D nano-imaging tensile experiments to characterize them. You will develop new experimental AI based numerical strategies to have a multi-scale correlation approach. The project will represent a significant step towards designing Al alloys for laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing with targeted mechanical behavior.Further information may be obtained from Julie Villanova (tel.: +33 (0)4 76 88 23 46; email: ), Pierre Lhuissier ( ) and Guilhem Martin ( )Expected profile
