Job description

Offer DescriptionPhD student – scholarship position available in the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS within NCN OPUS 23, no. UMO-2022/45/B/ST4/03863, “Activation of Dinitrogen by Multinuclear Iron and Vanadium Complexes Supported by Linked Sterically Demanding N,N’-subunits” (project leader: prof. dr hab. inż Janusz Lewiński)Main objective of the project is directed to advancing the fundamental knowledge of the activation of dinitrogen by properly designed multinuclear iron and vanadium complexes. Accordingly, the project aims to design, synthesise, and structure characterization of novel complexes supported by sterically encumbered ligands with N,N-binding sites of various angular dispositions of N-donor centres. Then, the resulting low-valent metal complexes will be utilised as model systems for the N2 activation and reduction. Specific objectives will include structure characterisation and reactivity studies of the obtained low-valent metal complexes towards N2 and elucidation of the intimate steps in the N2 activation via combined experimental and theoretical studies.Responsibilities:PhD student will be involved in the realization of the following research tasks:

  • Design and synthesis of various multidentate N-donor ligands of various angular dispositions of N-donor centres
  • Synthesis and structural characterization of multinuclear homo- and heterometalic Fe and V complexes supported by a range of multidentate N-donor ligands.
  • Synthesis of low-valent multinuclear V and Fe complexes utilizing various reducing agents and reaction conditions.
  • Activation of dinitrogen activation by a family of well-defined low-valent Fe and V complexes.
  • Characterization of physicochemical properties of the resulting products.
