Offer DescriptionIPHES-CERCA from Tarragona (Spain) opens a PhD position focused on predictive tools applied to Middle Palaeolithic occupational patterns.This predoctoral post will be carried out in the frame of the ERC Advanced Grant project “SCAVENGERS”, led by Dr. Jordi Rosell to investigate the effects of carnivores on prehistoric campsites to better understand the human occupational and behavioural patterns.The PhD will be carried out under the supervision of specialists in that field (e.g. Dr. Rosell, Dr. Blasco, Prof. Andreu Sansó), as well as with the postdoctoral team of the Scavengers Project.Since this ERC project has both wildlife experimental studies as well archaeological ones from Middle Palaeolithic, the selected candidate will participate in WP1 (Neotaphonomy) doing, under supervision, statistical analyses of the experimental assemblages of current scavengers, such as hyenas, wolves, bears, and other minor carnivores, from the experimental reproductions of prehistoric human campsites .Furthermore, she/he will also participate in the WP2 (Archaeological analyses of the sites) also learning to perform, under supervision, statistical analysis of archaeological hearth-related assemblages to make comparisons with the neo-taphonomic models.In addition, in the WP3, also working together with other specialists, all the available data will be processed by AI procedures to assess the effects of scavengers on Palaeolithic assemblages.Finally, the fellow must provide support for key research activities and studies across the different work packages of the project, taking a special care on the curation, organization, management, of the project’s data with the support of a Data Steward.The candidate will on board the team led by Dr Jordi Rosell , the PI of the SCAVENGERS project and, by extension, of its Host Institution, the Catalan Institute of the Human Palaeoecology and Human Evolution (IPHES-CERCA), located in Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain). IPHES is a Spanish research centre created in 2005, part of the Catalan CERCA Institute network. IPHES-CERCA is, supported by different public institutions and located on the STEM Campus of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) , which is part as an independent Institute. As a result, in addition to the facilities and services directly offered by IPHES, the fellow will benefit from the institute’s affiliation to URV campus.Besides the usual bibliometric, knowledge management and other information-related services provided by URV’s Library, she/he will have also access to other URV facilities and services.Finally, the fellow will be supported by IPHES Research Office assisting her/him for advice and monitoring of a personalized Career Development Plan (CDP), logistics and IT needs, as well of benefiting of specialized training services. Finally, IPHES’ administrative staff will also assist her/him regarding registration or any other day-to-day issues.Eligibility criteriaThis call is open to doctoral candidates, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or any other basis protected by state or local law applicable. However, as admission mandatory requirements, the candidate must:1) Meeting the legal requirements to be accepted in the Universitat Rovira i Virgili Doctoral Program in Quaternary and Prehistory2) Previous involvement using multivariate statistics applied to archaeology (e.g. Master thesis, participation in related papers).3) Basic competences in statistical data analysis software (R packages), programming skills (Python, R), and in the use of platforms as GitHub.4) Motivation to learn, travel and be trained in interdisciplinary research topics.5) Engagement with Open Science practices in a broad sense, but specially in the related fields of the Scavengers’ Project.6) Abilities to teamwork, integrating different interdisciplinary perspectives and to establish contacts with other researchers from several institutions.7) Excellent knowledge of English (oral and written).Other desirable requirements (non-mandatory):1) Familiarisation with the study of Palaeolithic taphonomic modifications (e.g. tooth marks, burning and breakage patterns).2) Knowledge on archaeological record from Middle Palaeolithic.Selection processThe candidate will be selected through a comparative evaluation following the eligibility criteria of the call, within the general IPHES-CERCA procedures .A gender balanced committee will be created including the PI, the Sicentific Manager of the project, an external researcher involved in the project and a staff member from the host institution.The selection process will have two main parts:The committee will evaluate the CVs and the cover letters provided by the candidates, drafting a short list with the more suitable candidates according to the call.The committee will organize interviews (in vivo or remote) with the selected candidates to make its final selection.Additional commentsDon’t hesitate to contact Dr. Rosell ( ) if you need additional information or visit the web of the host institution ( ).
