Context & Job descriptionThesis subject: Advanced magnetic spectroscopies for complex magnetic materialsYou will join ID32’s team at the ESRF, Grenoble, France, and the group of Prof. Cornelius Krellner at Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany. Beamline ID32 is specialised for investigations of the electronic and magnetic structure of hard condensed matter. It is used to study magnetism, superconductivity, and other exotic phases in transition metal and rare-earth compounds using X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering techniques. A new, highly efficient X-ray emission spectrometer combined with a high-field magnet recently opened up world-wide unique scientific opportunities for novel types of X-ray magnetic dichroism spectroscopy at ID32.The aim of this PhD project is to explore these new opportunities on the compelling scientific case of multi-site magnetic systems at the ESRF. Besides the experimental work itself, data analysis and X-ray spectroscopy calculations will be an integral part of this project.The Crystal and Materials Laboratory at Goethe University Frankfurt, led by Prof. Cornelius Krellner, is specialised in the synthesis and characterisation of strongly correlated electron systems. The mission of the lab is to discover novel materials with unconventional properties and to contribute to their understanding by growing and characterizing single crystals of the highest quality. • A background in spectroscopy techniques, single crystal growth techniques, and/or structural or physical property characterisation techniques is desirable. Knowledge of synchrotron spectroscopy, magnetism, as well as advanced data analysis would be an advantage.

• Degree allowing enrolment for a PhD (such as MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, physics or a closely related science. However minimum degree level may vary between universities.

• Manual skills and rigorous attention to detail are essential in this work environment.

• Proficiency in English (A proof of upper-intermediate B2 level must be included in the application. Applicants originating from native-English-speaking countries can apply without the need for proof of level. An official degree conducted in English will be also accepted as a proof). If the applicant is unable to provide proof, an English test (free of charge) will be requested.

• Compliance with the Marie Sklodowska-Curie mobility rule: candidates may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the host institute’s country for more than twelve months in the three years immediately before the date of recruitment.

• All researchers recruited must be doctoral candidates, i.e. not already working towards or in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment.

• Candidates must satisfy the conditions for enrolment in a doctoral programme.

Working conditionsFrankfurt (Germany) and based full-time at the ESRF (Grenoble, France) for 3 years. The candidate will spend an additional 12 months at the Goethe University Frankfurt.
