Job description

Job Description:Do you want to be involved in the green energy transition? Do you wish to contribute to the development of E-mobility integration and are you looking for a career in R&D or academia? Then we have a great opportunity! We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled candidate to join us as a PhD scholar. We offer a multidisciplinary, international, and friendly atmosphere, encouraging creativity, diversity, empathy, and teamwork. You will have a great opportunity to build strong networks with internationally known researchers at DTU and other universities as well as industrial partners. You will be affiliated with the Section on E-mobility and Prosumer Integration in the Division of Power and Energy Systems. Collaboration with neighboring sections along with DTU sustain and the Centre for Absolute Sustainability is highly encouraged. The Section on E-mobility and Prosumer Integration undertakes internationally leading research and teaching in the field of EV technologies, charging infrastructure and flexibility, advanced power electronics, battery energy systems and hybrid AC-DC systems. The research in this section is multidisciplinary and the team is currently formed by 28 researchers from 15 different countries.Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD project is part of a strategic initiative funded by DTU to reinforce collaboration across departments, specifically with DTU Center for Absolute Sustainability. DTU Centre for Absolute Sustainability (CfAS) was established in June 2022 with the mission of bringing together leading competences in technology research, sustainability assessment and design for sustainability to foster research and innovation that enables fact-based and strategic sustainability decision-making and implementation in Denmark and the world.Outline of the project: Electric vehicles (EVs) play a crucial role for sustainable transportation and climate change mitigation. However, their environmental impact extends beyond usage. This PhD project focuses on exploring circularity and absolute sustainability aspects of EV battery packs, with an emphasis on optimal battery usage for driving and grid services under bidirectional charging schemes. The PhD work will begin by building capacity for life cycle assessments and absolute environmental sustainability assessments within the technology scope of the project. It then defines the optimal management approaches for charging management by considering the trade-off between charging efficiency, environmental impacts associated with the electricity mix, battery degradation and user requirements. It concludes the investigation by assessing benefits such as grid support during peak demands and enabling EVs to act as distributed energy resources through Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology. This PhD project will actively drive these topics in collaboration with colleagues and other stakeholders. Your primary tasks will be:

  • Plan and manage your PhD project in collaboration with supervisors.
  • Model the life cycle environmental impacts of battery packs for EVs (production, usage, disposal) with capacity of benchmarking against planetary limits or carrying capacities to ensure that EV-associated transport systems are deployed in an absolute sustainability perspective.
  • Define the best trade-off between driving requirements, battery degradation minimization and provision of grid services under V2G charging schemes to utilize battery packs in the most efficient way.
  • Provide recommendations to policymakers to bring about the absolute sustainability perspective so that we can move from “better” to “good enough” in the automotive sector.

A detailed project plan will be developed with the supervisors within the first two months after enrolment. You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) in engineering, natural sciences or similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a master’s degree. The successful candidate has an education in a relevant engineering field or computer/data science and is required to have:

  • Excellent grades in your master program
  • Dedication and the desire to learn
  • Good programming skills (MATLAB and/or Python)
  • Strong knowledge of energy systems and life cycle assessment
  • Familiar with absolute environmental sustainability
  • Ability to work effectively with data and applied statistics
  • Ability to present results in technical reports and prepare scientific papers
  • Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals
  • Fluent in communicating and reporting in English

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see .
