PhD scholarship in Optical Communication Systems using Data Distribution – DTU Electro

Company:

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Job description

DTU Electro invites applications for a 3-year PhD position on “Optical Communication Systems using Data Distribution”, starting on 1 August 2024.This PhD project is part of the IFD (Innovation Fund Denmark) project GreenCOM, which focuses on developing energy-efficient communication technologies. The goal of this PhD project is to investigate spatial data distribution as a means to reduce the number of optical amplifiers in optical terrestrial fibre links. The PhD student will derive optimised scenarios for optical networks in terms of reduced number of amplifiers and hence repeater huts, which can create energy savings in optical networks. The PhD project involves collaborations with industrial partners concerning the optical fibres and the optical amplifiers, and the aim is to design energy-efficient terrestrial fibre links with optimum amplifiers spacing and amplifier performance.Responsibilities and qualifications
The main purpose of this PhD project is to investigate the principle of spatial data distribution to arrive at communication system designs that are either more energy efficient or save on resources in some other way. In particular the project will investigate terrestrial systems and derive system designs with reduced number of amplifier huts, and explore fibres and amplifiers for such systems. In addition, the project will explore the impact of data distribution on unrepeatered fibre links. The primary tasks will be:

  • Theoretical investigation of spatial data distribution for terrestrial links.
  • Develop and implement schemes for reducing the number of repeater huts.
  • Characterisation of system designs with reduced amplifier count.
  • Characterisation of amplifiers developed specifically for data distribution, and investigation of energy efficiency.

The candidate should have a master’s degree, or similar, in physics, optical or electrical engineering or similar. The qualifications of the candidate would preferably include experience with communication systems and metrics and optics. Experimental skills are appreciated but can be learned.Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see .We offer
