Job description

Job Description:You will be a part of DTEC. The DTU TotalEnergies Excellence Center for Clean Energy (DTEC) is a new research and educational initiative with the ambition of speeding up the development of key energy technologies. The purpose of DTEC is to do research and technology development in clean energy with a special focus on wind power generation. DTEC develops and demonstrates world-class technology solutions within, e.g., offshore wind, hybrid systems and green hydrogen technologies. You will be part of a dynamic work environment with a pleasant team atmosphere, where you will have the opportunity to grow and develop your academic, industrial, and personal skills, including direct industrial R&D experience. You will have the opportunity to spend significant amount of time (6-12 months) at TotalEnergies R&D facilities in Paris, France. The Division for Power and Energy Systems at the Department of Wind and Energy Systems provides cutting-edge research in sustainable, reliable and cost-efficient energy systems to the benefit of society. At the Department, you will enjoy the advantages of a creative and inspiring work environment shared with about 400 highly skilled and motivated colleagues.Responsibilities and qualifications
Power systems today are very reliable, with only very few and far apart catastrophic events leading to black-out. When it does happen, the power system requires restoration. Restoration refers to the process of restarting the grid following a power cut. The process requires the existence of generators that can generate electricity without reliance on external supplies, also called “self-starting” generators. The provision of this capability is called black-start and is an ancillary service that has been long associated with conventional synchronous generators in power systems.
With the going massive increase of renewable energy sources, the focus on providing this essential service is shifting towards large offshore wind power plants, due to the high installed capacity (higher expected availability) and high voltage (typically connected to the high voltage transmission system). While the wind turbine power electronic converters can generate and control voltage and frequency, this is not the standard operating way today. Wind turbines are following the grid, i.e. injecting currents with the same angle as the grid currents. Wind turbine’s ability of self-starting and energizing the electrical infrastructure has been shown in simulations and in (limited) field trials, multiple open questions remain, especially towards concrete approaches and solutions applied to real, large offshore wind farms.
The PhD project, at the intersection of power electronics, control engineering and power systems, has as main goal to develop and evaluate solutions for self-energisation and black start capability of an offshore wind power plant. You will be a part of an international team working with converter-based power systems, developing applied solutions advancing the development of wind power plants. If you have the skills but not the experience in wind energy science, we would still like to hear from you. The same is valid if you feel you only have part of the skills, but the desire and ability to improve on the rest.We are looking for a self-motivated and team-oriented person who thrives in a collaborative environment and enjoys working with complex, multi-disciplinary topics.A good candidate will fulfil most of the following points:

  • Knowledge in one or more of the following fields:
  • Offshore wind power technology
  • VSC and MMC operation and control
  • Power system restoration principles
  • Experience with software packages like PSCAD and/or PowerFactory and scientific Python

Desired skills:

  • Familiarity with electrical grid operation and requirements
  • Proficiency in the English language
  • Good ability to present results in oral presentations and prepare scientific papers for publication in international journals

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please seeAssessment
