Then we have the right opportunity for you.The Department of Technology, Management and Economics at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in Nurse Scheduling, starting in September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is part of a joint research project between DTU Management and the Technical University of Munich, Campus Straubing (TUM, Prof. Dr. Alexander Hübner). The PhD student will be part of the Management Science Division at DTU Management. The position is affiliated to the Operations & Supply Chain Management Section.The PhD project aims at analyzing and solving nurse scheduling and bed management problems in hospitals with advanced methodology. The methods from Operations Research, Management Science, Data Science, and Analytics are very suitable to study the decision problems and allow for making sound decisions. The focus of the PhD project will be on the combination of nurse scheduling and bed management in German and Danish hospitals.Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be strengthening the department’s competencies in modelling and optimizing healthcare-related decision problems. You will work alongside with academics and healthcare professionals. As a PhD student, you will:

  • Be responsible for conducting your own research project
  • Contribute to new knowledge about analytics in healthcare
  • Strive to publish your work worldwide in recognised journals
  • Work in close collaboration with the alliance partner TUM (Prof. Dr. Hübner and his team)
  • Have regular (short- and long-term) visits at TUM Campus Straubing
  • Collaborate with researchers from the Management Science Division
  • Present your work at international conferences and seminars
  • Teach and supervise engineering students

The PhD project will be jointly supervised by Professor Jens O. Brunner (DTU) and Prof. Dr. Alexander Hübner (TUM) and the candidates for the PhD position will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Profound knowledge in Operations Research, Management Science, Data Science, and Analytics
  • Knowledge of and practical experience with programming (e.g., Python, Java, Julia, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of healthcare operations management

Priority will be given to candidates capable of speaking/understanding the Danish language.You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.Approval and Enrolment
