Job title:

PhD scholarship in bioinspired hierarchical ceramic based composites by microstructural engineering – DTU Energy

Company:

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Job description

The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applications for a PhD scholarship in the development of bioinspired hierarchical ceramic for both room and high temperature load bearing application.Ceramics are inherently brittle, but it can come as a surprise to us that human bone and teeth are majorly ceramics and yet support the load of a human body. The mother of pearl (nacre) is yet another example of a natural material which is 95% ceramics and has a combination of mechanical strength and toughness. Although the constituents of bone and pearl are calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate respectively, the secret of extra-ordinary mechanical properties lies in the hierarchical microstructure.Nature has a limited option of materials which are mainly calcium based due to its availability and ease of bio-mineralization. However, we humans have the whole periodic table to us and we can use advanced materials with already good mechanical properties for the fabrication of ceramic or its composites thereof. The aim of the PhD work is to mimic the hierarchical microstructure using advanced ceramics like aluminum oxide (Al2O3), Silicon Carbide (SiC), etc.Responsibilities and qualifications
The successful candidate will work on the fabrication of nacre inspired ceramic composites using various shaping techniques like tape casting, slip casting, freeze drying and colloidal processing. The work will also aim at the synthesis of ceramics with specific morphology. The processing strategies will be developed for obtaining specific hierarchical microstructure like that of nacre. The green ceramics will then be subjected to high temperature using spark plasma sintering. The sintered ceramics will be evaluated for microstructure and mechanical robustness at room and high temperature. A combination of fracture strength and toughness with R-curve behavior will be analyzed from the data obtained from the mechanical characterization. As part of the PhD education, you will follow courses and assist in teaching activities, and:

  • You are expected to spend at least 3 months at a foreign research institution.
  • You are expected to disseminate your work in international peer reviewed journals and at international conferences.

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see .Assessment
Your application will be assessed by Dr. Apurv Dash and Prof. Wolff Ragnar Kiebach. We offer
