PhD Position Partial Discharge Behaviour of Cables under HVDC Superimposed with Transient Over-Voltages and Harmonics
Offer DescriptionThe aim of this work is to develop new measurement procedures for monitoring, detection, classification and localisation of defects or damage in HVDC cables. The work will be focused on expanding the PD measurement method established in the FutureEnergy project. During that project, it became apparent that PD activity in HVDC occurs primarily during sudden changes in the electrical field, rather than under constant conditions. Hence, there is a requirement to improve measurement capabilities to account for transient over-voltages and harmonics superimposed on HVDC, prompting the need for an extended PD measurement procedure. In this project the task is to develop new measurement capabilities for PD measurement in HVDC cables at 100 kV or above for use in monitoring systems for detection, classification, and localization of defects before breakdown. The activities of this project will be related to the study of the behaviour of PD when transient over-voltages and harmonics components are superimposed on HVDC. To study the behaviour under these conditions, specific laboratory test setups will be developed.About the departmentThe research in the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy is inspired by the technical, scientific, and societal challenges originating from the transition towards a more sustainable society and focuses on four areas:The Electrical Sustainable Energy Department provides expertise in these areas throughout the entire energy system chain. The department owns a large ESP Laboratory assembling High Voltage testing, DC Grids testing, PV testing and a large RTDS that is actively used for real-time simulation of future electrical power systems. The High Voltage Technologies (HVT) group, headed by Professor Peter Vaessen, works on the future of our power system. The goal is to generate, transmit and use electrical energy in a highly reliable, efficient, stable, clean, affordable, and safe way. HVT develops novel and sustainable insulation materials, investigates high voltage components and materials ageing and develops new diagnostic techniques for determining high voltage asset health. The group possesses a well-equipped HV-laboratory within the ESP-lab.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsSpecific RequirementsEssential job requirements
