It includes a variety of voices and amplifies those that are often less heard, such as citizens, non-governmental organizations, or representatives of the Global South. Transdisciplinary education is closely linked to society, embraces diversity, and strives for equal collaboration in addressing societal challenges. Currently, there is an urgent need for better understanding how transdisciplinary education can be organized, within universities and their ecosystems. How can this education have a positive impact on (local and global) societies? How can it be structurally embedded and help transform universities ?Job descriptionThe PhD candidate will be part of an enthusiastic team of researchers and teachers shaping transdisciplinary education at the University of Twente. You will use qualitative and participatory methods to provide critically important insights to the design and organization of transdisciplinary education, and to the improvement of its societal impact.Your profileWe are looking for a candidate who has:

  • A Master’s degree in science & technology studies, higher education studies, organization studies, design studies or other relevant studies;
  • Affinity with innovative and societally-engaged forms of (higher) education;
  • Ability and aspiration to work in a transdisciplinary environment;
  • Ability to conduct (qualitative) research and eagerness to develop high-quality research and publication skills;
  • Ambition to impact and innovate higher education through design of educational concepts.
  • Curiosity, a critical & open mind, societal engagement;
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills;
  • Excellent command of English.

We follow the terms of employment by the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO). Our offer contains a full-time 4-year PhD position with a first-year qualifier; excellent mentorship in a stimulating research environment with excellent facilities; and a personal development program. It also includes:

  • Gross monthly salary of € 2.770 in the first year, increasing each year up to € 3.539 in the fourth year;
  • Excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, and a pension scheme;
  • 29 holidays per year in case of full-time employment;
  • A training program as part of the Twente Graduate School where you and your supervisors will settle a plan for a suitable education and supervision;
