Job description

Offer DescriptionThe Mediterranean region is facing escalating challenges from climate change, including intensifying droughts, shifting rainfall patterns, and increasing occurrences of heavy rainstorms, flash floods, and pluvial flooding. As the region warms, these alterations not only threaten water management, agriculture, and ecosystems but also reverberate through its socioeconomic framework, influencing migration patterns and even precipitating sociopolitical upheavals. Events like the severe rainfalls in Madrid, Libya, Greece, and Turkey in 2022 spotlight the urgency of these transformations. The Mediterranean, and particularly densely populated areas like the Community of Madrid with its limited water reservoirs, needs improved hydro climate models to capture these complexities. This makes MedCrat’s mission critical: offering accurate science-backed tools to inform decisions and manage resources sustainably in a changing climate landscape. Responding to the growing need for comprehensive knowledge, the centerpiece of the project is MedCRAT viewer, an advanced open-access tool. MedCRAT dives deep into historical hydroclimate patterns, evaluates potential threats from climatic extremes, forecasts hydroclimate changes grounded in past data, and emphasizes crucial evapotranspiration metrics essential for robust resource management as climates evolve. Powering MedCRAT is a cutting-edge data assimilation product, which merges over 500 high-resolution proxy records with state-of-the-art climate model simulations. Through this tool, the project envisions a bridge between historical hydroclimatic wisdom and future projections, shaping adaptive strategies rooted in rigorous scientific understanding. By converging historical insights with cutting-edge science, MedCRAT is driven by the pursuit of understanding and the imperative of adaptation. It strives to bridge knowledge gaps, equipping stakeholders across the Mediterranean, with a special focus in the Community of Madrid, with actionable insights. The intention is to facilitate informed adaptation strategies that resonate with both historical learnings and future projections, fostering resilience in the face of ever-evolving climatic challenges. The PhD is fully funded by the Atracción Talento C. Madrid program ¨César Nombela¨.Position Description :The PhD is open to a variety of topics included in the project. The successful candidate will engage in extensive dendrochronological sampling across various Mediterranean locations including Spain, Morocco, Corsica, Italy, Greece, and Lebanon. This role involves updating millennial-length chronologies, developing new hydroclimatic reconstructions, and innovating standardization methods for dendrochronological data. The responsibilities also extend to developing data assimilation products that incorporate a variety of proxy records and climate model simulations, as well as understanding climate dynamics and performing attribution experiments.
