PhD Position High Voltage Technologies Group

Job description

Offer DescriptionTenneT’s HV power grid contains 110 kV and 150 kV substations, both air insulated (AIS) and gas insulated (GIS). The standardized voltage ratings are 123 kV for 110 kV and 170 kV for 150 kV. However, most equipment on the market for 123 kV actually is rated for 145 kV, being the most common rating on the market. The worldwide market for 170 kV switchgear is very limited while most of TenneT’s substations are rated for 170 kV.TenneT is standardising its substations, thus it is worth to research in what way components rated for 145 kV can be used in the 150 kV grid instead of 170 kV equipment, reducing space and costs. For this, the required measures and suitable locations have to be investigated.Besides the possible cost and space reduction, another reason for this study is the search for natural origin gases as an alternative to SF6. Switchgears with natural origin gases are being developed by the industry. However, as the demand is high for 145 kV equipment as opposed to170 kV, no priority is given for developing natural origin gas insulated 170 kV switchgear. This conflicts with the need for TenneT to severely reduce the amount of SF6 in its grid.TU Delft is hiring a PhD student whose main goal is to find out if, where and under which circumstances 145 kV switchgear can be used instead of 170 kV switchgear in our rapidly evolving power grid and which further measures are required for that. The study can include insulation coordination, simulations for determining overvoltages, application of surge arresters, full scale testing and on-site measurements. We offer a four-year PhD appointment, with an anticipated start date between 01-12-2024 and 01-02-2025. You will be supervised by ir. André Lathouwers, dr.ir. Dennis van der Born and Prof.ir. Peter Vaessen.Your research is part of a drive towards a reliable and sustainable energy system in the Netherlands. Which is why you’ll work closely with the Dutch high voltage transmission system operator TenneT TSO. You will be coaching and mentoring master students. Fostering a synergetic, open-minded, and win-together culture, we regularly interact and share views, unlocking opportunities, forms of incubation, and deployment of knowledge and ground-breaking developments. We also stimulate a healthy and inclusive work environment in which you can bring out the best in yourself. And we value autonomy, professionalism, and a balanced work-life approach. You will benefit from extensive training in technical and transferrable skills.About the departmentThe research in the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy is inspired by the technical, scientific, and societal challenges originating from the transition towards a more sustainable society and focuses on four areas:

  • DC Systems, Energy Conversion and Storage (DCE&S)
  • Photovoltaic Materials and Devices (PVMD)
  • Intelligent Electrical Power Grids (IEPG)
  • High Voltage Technologies (HVT)

The Electrical Sustainable Energy Department provides expertise in these areas throughout the entire energy system chain. The department owns a large ESP Laboratory assembling High Voltage testing, DC Grids testing, PV testing and a large RTDS that is actively used for real-time simulation of future electrical power systems. The High Voltage Technologies (HVT) group, headed by Professor Peter Vaessen, works on the future of our power system. The goal is to generate, transmit and use electrical energy in a highly reliable, efficient, stable, clean, affordable, and safe way. HVT develops novel and sustainable insulation materials, investigates high voltage components and materials ageing and develops new diagnostic techniques for determining high voltage asset health. The group possesses a well-equipped HV-laboratory within the ESP lab.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsSpecific RequirementsEssential job requirements
