Job title:

PhD on terahertz Imaging transmitter based on photonic integrated circuits

Company:

Eindhoven University of Technology

Job description

Job descriptionYou are invited to join our team as part of the started PhotonDelta program. Our aim is to work on an integrated terahertz generation and detection system for computational imaging. The full system includes THz transmitter, imaging system and THz detection. In this project, we focus on a fully packaged PIC-based THz transmitter module for imaging applications that can generate radiation in the range of 300-500 GHz and with outpower up to 1mW. The result of the project will contribute to the roadmap and goals of the NGF fotonica in the area of integrated photonics for THz imaging and sensing.Job DescriptionTHz imaging systems, after many years of research and technology advancements are moving from research facilities closer to companies for proper industrial applications. In combination with millimetre-wave frequencies, computational-based imaging at THz can allow for 3D imaging with both high lateral and depth resolution. A similar evolution in the neighbouring spectra, e.g., infrared and optical frequencies, is becoming a critical sensing tool in autonomous vehicles and systems. Similar advancements can occur at THz however the challenge is to create widely reconfigurable sources with the capability of beam focusing and steering for faster and higher resolution image acquisitions. The generation of THz radiation is fulfilled in the nearby electromagnetic spectrum, i.e., electronics, optoelectronic emitters, or optics-based source.Photonic based THz sources have the advantages of high-stability, broad tunability and capability to operate in room-temperature. It offers the unique opportunity to ensure a high modulation index and/or phase coding introduced from optical coherent network technologies. Your PhD research will contribute to developing high performance photonic integrated circuits-based terahertz transmitter by leveraging on existing state-of-the-art THz generation techniques, resulting in improvements in scale, cost, and performance. Your research will feed-back efforts in the Photondelta evaluation meeting. What’s in it for you?

  • You will learn and work on advanced PIC based THz technology.
  • You will be able to join a large national consortium, thereby expanding your network.
  • Excellent opportunities for personal development with amongst others personal coaching and training opportunities.
  • Your findings will directly contribute to enhancing (future) THz applications.

Job requirements

  • A master’s degree (or an equivalent degree) in electrical engineering, applied physics, or related areas.
  • A multi-disciplinary research-oriented attitude.
  • Interest in photonics integrated circuits design to contribute to solving the THz source challenge for compact, high power, and stability.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and interested in collaborating with industrial partners.
  • Motivated to develop your teaching skills and coach students.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).

Conditions of employmentA meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. €2,770 max. €3,539).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own

. * An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children’s day care and sports facilities.

  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
