Offer DescriptionThis specific research project in sports medicine and ethics aims to investigate the epistemological and ethical issues in sports medicine in relation to eating disorders in elite athletes.Eating disorders cannot be understood without reference to the moral values that are internalized by individuals with eating disorders. Among these values are self-control, self-discipline, austerity, commitment, achievement, hard work and purity. Many of these values belong also to the sporting ethos.Although eating disorders are prevalent and can have debilitating impacts for this population, help-seeking is rare for this population compared to the general population.This research project aims at investigating the values internalized by elite athletes with eating disorders, and ascertain to what extent if any of these values differ from the values in the general population of individuals with eating disorder. Investigating elite athletes’ perspectives and values will inform the understanding of what factors contribute to eating disorders in elite athletes, and constitute barriers to help-seeking, diagnosis and treatment in this population.This is a PhD by publication route.The deliverables in this project are: a) to critically review the non-epistemic values associated with an eating disorder diagnosis from a patient’s perspective; b) to identify the specificities of non-epistemic values associated with an eating disorder diagnosis from the patient’s perspective in an athlete’s population; c) to identify the specificities of non-epistemic values associated with an eating disorder diagnosis from the coaches’ perspective in an athlete’s population, d) to identify the barriers if any to identification in eating disorders from the point of view of coaches and other members of the elite’s athlete entourage, e) to develop an ethical framework in sports medicine for ethically dealing with eating disorders in the context of coach-athlete relationship.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Ethics in health sciences Education Level Master Degree or equivalentResearch Field Sociology Education Level Master Degree or equivalentLanguages ENGLISH Level GoodResearch Field Ethics in health sciences » Other Years of Research Experience NoneAdditional InformationBenefitsA PhD position within an internationally leading multidisciplinary team with relevant experience and unique expertise across sports medicine and ethics and clinical psychology. The research will take place at KU Leuven in the Department of Public Health and Primary care, under the promotion of Professor Silvia Camporesi and Professor Laurence Claes.
