PhD fellowship in the physiology of menopause
KU – SCIENCE -FOOD og NEXS
Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, The August Krogh section for Human Physiology, invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in the physiological mechanisms responsible for changes in cardiovascular and metabolic function in the transition from pre- to postmenopause. The project is part of the research project Women in healthy transistion (in Danish: Kvinder I sund overgang, KISO).Start date is (expected to be) 1 January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The projectWith the cessation of estrogen production at menopause, the risk of cardiovascular diseases increases dramatically, body composition is altered and metabolic health may be impaired. Physical activity is the single most powerful “drug” for maintaining and improving cardiovascular and metabolic health. However, recent data suggest that the positive effects of physical activity may be diminished after the menopausal transition. In this project, I will study why menopause affects the efficacy of physical activity and whether physical activity and/or hormone replacement therapy around the menopausal transition can mitigate this effect. The project follows a cohort of women who are being studied before they enter menopause, during the transition, and up to 20 years after the menopausal transition. This project is part of a larger study that looks beyond physiology by also examining the impact of menopause and physical activity on sociological and psychological factors.
