The Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics (CEH) is a Center of Excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation to study how interaction between genes and microbes determine biological evolution by developing and implementing state-of-the-art ‘omics and associated computational techniques, to address through experimental and theoretical research. CEH’s main purpose is to address basic scientific questions through interdisciplinary approaches, operating at the intersection of natural sciences, medical sciences and the humanities. The CEH is implementing an innovative research line in which we will for the first time conduct comparative evolutionary research on animal-microbiota interactions using gut-on-a-chip technology. Gut-on-a-chip organoid models are the most advanced in vitro technologies to study animal-microbiota interactions, for reproducing many of the essential biological properties of real intestines, such as pilosity, cell line differentiation, biochemical gradients and peristalsis. The objective of the fellowship is to generate intestinal organoids from wild animals belonging to multiple evolutionary lineages to create homologous gut-on-a-chip models, with which to study how reaction of animal tissues to microbial stimuli varies across evolutionary distinct species.The PhD Fellow will need to collect intestinal tissue, develop standardised protocols to generate the intestinal organoids, seed them on stretchable PDMS chips, conduct experiment with them and run a range of microscopy and molecular assays at the Globe Institute’s organoid lab.Principal supervisor is Associate Professor Antton Alberdi, Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics, Department of Hologenomics, , +45 53 84 01 19.Start: February 1, 2025, or after agreement with the cohort of the MSCA-DNDuration: 3 years as a PhD FellowJob description
Your key tasks as a PhD Fellow at SUND are:

• Carrying through an independent research project under supervision.
• Completing PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approximately 30 ECTS points.
• Participating in all training activities organised within the DN Hologen.
• Participating in active research environments including a stay at another research team.
• Obtaining experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project.
• Teaching and disseminating your knowledge.
• Writing a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project.

Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project, e.g. biology, stem cell, bioengineering, or similar. Please note that your master’s degree must be equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years).Other important criteria are:

• You have experience in cell cultures and/or organoids.
• You are comfortable with handling animals and performing dissections.
• You are proactive and have a problem-solving attitude.
• You have proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams.
• You have excellent English skills written and spoken.
• You must comply with European Commission’s mobility rule: you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting organisation for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.

The researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her/their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Short stays as holidays and compulsory military service and/or Refugee Convention 1951 are disregarded.Eligibility as Doctoral Candidate (DC)
The recruited DC must be doctoral candidates, i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the first day of the employment. Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week. The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 3 years. The starting date is February 1, 2025, or after agreement.The employment is conditioned upon the applicant’s successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School, the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the faculty’s rules on achieving the degree.Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
