Job description
PhD Project in thermal state preparation and self correctionThe department of Computer Science invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in Quantum algorithms and Quantum Error Correction. The project is part of the research project “Quantum Gibbs sampling”, which is financed by the DEIC Q-Algorithm center.Start date is expected to be 15 February 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The project
true transformational potential of quantum computing is expected to emerge in the fault-tolerant era, but beyond Shor’s algorithm, the practical advantages remain uncertain. A promising development is the new quantum Metropolis (qMet) algorithm, which prepares the thermal state of a quantum many-body Hamiltonian and could be widely useful for simulating materials, molecules, and optimization tasks. This PhD project aims to explore specific applications of qMet, focusing on resource estimation, material simulation, and optimization.Who are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates within the field(s) of physics, mathematics or computer science. Some knowledge of quantum computing or quantum informtaiton is preferrable. Our group and research- and what do we offer?
The quantum algorithms group at DIKU is a rapidly growing subgroup of the Algorithms division. We aim at building a diverse team. All applications are welcome; those from members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged.Research environment The candidate will be working very closely with our local and international collaborators. In particular, the group has regular meetings and shared office opportunities with the Center for Quantum Mathematics at the University of Copenhagen, the Pioneer center for AI the Niels Bohr Institute and the Novo Nordisk quantum computing center as well as our quantum start-up partnersCopenhagen is becoming one of the epicentres for quantum technologies research and development, with a myriad of activity both in the academic and in the industrial space. The candidates are expected to engage with the various partners in this space. The group is a part of computer science, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. * Principal supervisor: Michael Kastoryano, Associate Professor in Computer Science at DIKUThe PhD programme
