Hydrogen is certain to play a role on a terawatt scale, and most of the energy lost today is due to water oxidation on the anode by the oxygen evolution reaction, 2 H2O → O2 + 4 (H+ + e-). A materials bottleneck looms in the requirement of the rare element iridium to catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction at the anode of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, the preferred technology today for coupling hydrogen production to renewable electricity. There is therefore, arguably, no reaction more urgent to focus on than the oxygen evolution reaction.The project has the goals of (1) developing new oxygen evolution catalyst materials to replace iridium, (2) elucidating the mechanisms of water oxidation and catalyst degradation using in-situ characterization techniques, and (3) building a data infrastructure to enable analysis of electrocatalytic activity descriptors by machine learning.Who are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates within the field(s) of experimental electrochemistry, physical chemistry and kinetics, and inorganic synthesis and characterization. Applicants can have a background from Chemical Engineering, Physics, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, or Renewable Energy. Applicants should have a solid grasp of thermodynamics, be comfortable thinking quantitatively, and work well in a group setting. Experience with data science using python and/or SQL is an advantage.Our group and research- and what do we offer?
The group is a part of Department of Chemistry, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. Scott, and is the first PhD project in the Group. Our group is within the Nano Chemistry Research Section, and we collaborate closely with the other groups in the section, especially those of professor Jan Rossmeisl assc. Prof. Kirsten Jensen and asst. Prof. Rebecca PittkowskiOur research facilities include modern laboratories housing potentiostats, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, gas chromatography – mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy among other equipment. Depending of your level of education, you can undertake the PhD programme as either:Option A: A three year full-time study within the framework of (5+3 scheme), if you already have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master’s degree.Option B: An up to five year full-time study programme within the framework of (the 3+5 scheme), if you do not have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master´s degree – but you have an education equivalent to a Danish bachelors´s degree.Option A: Getting into a position on the regular PhD programmeQualifications needed for the regular programme
To be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.The terms of employment and salary are in accordance to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC). To be eligible for the integrated scholarship, you are (or are eligible to be) enrolled at one of the faculty’s master programmes in chemistry or nanoscience.Students on the integrated programme will enroll as PhD students simultaneously with completing their enrollment in this MSc degree programme.
