Offer DescriptionIRTA is currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated PhD candidate to join the Animal Breeding & Genetics Program. We invite applications from ambitious candidates with relevant research experience and passion to conduct research and innovation activities on the project titled: “Optimizing life-time sow performance and piglet survival in breeding farms using precision feeding and machine learning”.The overall goal of this PhD project is to create a digital tool that will allow monitoring, predicting, and providing decision-making recommendations to optimize life-time sow performance and piglet robustness of pig breeding farms. The digital tool will use technical and reproductive data from BDporc as well as precision feeding and environmental data from a pilot farm.RequirementsResearch Field Biological sciences » Nutritional sciences Education Level Master Degree or equivalentResearch Field Computer science » Modelling tools Education Level Master Degree or equivalentSkills/Qualifications-Candidates must hold one of the following degrees:– a) A Master’s in Animal Production or Bioinformatics or similar; or– b) To be in a position to access a doctoral programme according to the requirements of Catalan universities, i.e. accrediting between 60 and 120 ECTS credits at the official university master’s degree level or equivalent.– Not to have a previous PhD degree.– Candidates who have been chosen for an interview with the Selection Committee, should bring or send -for the interview- a certified copy of the degree and/or master, as well as the academic record showing the marks of all subjects studied.Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the development of a new Digital Platform aimed at the pig sector by developing and implementing new strategies of data integration, analytical tools, and artificial intelligence algorithms for an optimal decision support system.
• Participate in the research to create a digital tool that will allow to optimize life-time sow performance and piglet robustness of pig breeding farms using technical and reproductive data from BDporc as well as precision feeding and environmental data from a pilot farm.
• Write and submit scientific articles with the results of the performed research, contributing to the scientific production of the Animal Breeding and Genetics Program.
• Participate in the dissemination and transfer of the research results to the society and livestock sectors through technical articles, conferences, and sectorial meetings.

Specific RequirementsDesirable requirements:

• Experience and expertise in statistics, multivariate analysis, data modelling and programming.
• Knowledge of computational statistics, prediction theory and artificial intelligence.
• Knowledge of the animal breeding and production sectors.
• Dissemination skills: presentation/communication skills and technical writing.

• Salary: The financial remuneration for the PhD Candidate contract will be €1,336.3/gross per month (18,708.20/gross per annum) and for the first and second years. For this third year, it will be €1,431.83/gross per month (€20,045.62/gross per annum) and for the fourth year it will be €1,789.79/gross per month (€25,057.06/gross per annum)which will be subject to the corresponding withholdings, pursuant to prevailing regulations, and to the collective employment agreement of IRTA. IRTA will also pay the fees of the doctoral school when receiving the enrolment. (1)
