Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA’s Major Programme 2, “Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection”. This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme’s objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Division of Human Health is organized into four Sections whose objectives are to enhance the capabilities of Member States to address needs related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health problems through the development and application of nuclear techniques within a framework of quality assurance.

The Applied Radiation Biology and Radiotherapy Section’s primary objective is to enhance Member States’ capabilities to establish sound policies concerning radiotherapy and cancer treatment, and to ensure the effective and efficient utilization of current and future advanced cancer radiotherapy treatment technologies.

Main Purpose

As a member of a team led by the Section Head, the Paediatric Radiation Oncologist: (1) coordinates and supports research, provides technical and advisory services, and collects, analyses, and disseminates information related to radiation therapy as applied to cancer treatment; (2) initiates activities in the field of paediatric radiotherapy aiming at upgrading paediatric radiotherapy capabilities and research in developing countries to help improve cancer cure rates in safe clinical practice; and (3) develops guidelines, training material, and teaching programmes in paediatric radiation oncology for developing countries

Role

The Paediatric Radiation Oncologist is: (1) a technical advisor and research coordinator, helping to ensure the efficient and effective development and implementation of research and training; (2) a technical expert , providing expertise to the Section, Division, and other IAEA staff on programmatic, scientific, and technical matters; (3) a team member, striving to improve the team activities and team approach towards providing high-quality service and sustainable development in practices and improved cancer care for Children in Member States in the field of paediatric radiation oncology.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Provide technical input and review of impact reviews and NCCPs focussing on paediatric cancer care components.
  • Coordinate and liaise with experts in the field on the use of paediatric radiology and nuclear medicine in the radiotherapy planning and treatment follow-up of children with cancer.
  • Coordinate and liaise with experts in the field to develop a standardized educational curriculum for the subspecialty of Paediatric Radiation Oncology
  • Coordinate and liaise with experts to develop a standardized educational short-term specialized fellowship for refreshing skills in various specialties
  • Coordinate and liaise with experts to develop education and training materials, as well as guidance documents, in paediatric radiotherapy
  • Coordinate and liaise with experts to develop Paediatric Radiotherapy patient-centred quality management audit tools.
  • Coordinate and liaise with experts to develop e-learning materials, ensuring that the educational content is continuously updated and available online.
  • Coordinate the paediatric radiation therapy components of training courses and workshops for education, training, and the dissemination of the developed global goods.
  • Coordination of the development of standardized datasets for paediatric radiation therapy, patient management, and research.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

  • Master’s Degree – Advanced Medical degree with specialization in Radiation Oncology or Clinical Oncology with Paediatric Radiation Oncology training
  • Minimum of seven years of recent scientific experience in paediatric radiation therapy working in a cancer hospital and/or teaching institution.
  • Experience in clinical research as evidenced by recent publications in the field of paediatric radiation oncology.
  • Clinical and administrative experience.
  • Good national and international standing in the area of specialization and association with international societies.
  • Experience in international project management and coordination.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $84672 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 47501*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks’ annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
