The Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for one or more positions as Associate Professor or Assistant Professor in the field of Urban Design as per 1st of June 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a permanent full time position. The Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology has as its goal the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research which integrate creativity, engineering and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user. You can read more on the DepartmentJobbeskrivelseThe applicant should be willing to be part of a collaborative research and teaching environment with an interdisciplinary approach that conducts critical, social-minded urban design research and teaching. The research environment focuses on urban design that explores the built environment and its relation to humans and more-than-humans, within the two overall themes of mobilities and urban transformation.Applicants must demonstrate strong competences within the field of urban design spanning design practices, research methodologies and theories and have solid research, teaching, and dissemination experience. Within the field of urban design, we welcome applicants with research experience related to issues such as public space and landscape design, mobilities design, transformation processes of the built environment, inclusive practices of co-creation within a diverse landscape of interests and the necessary rethinking of design practices conditioned by a transition towards sustainable development. Further, the applicant has a solid background in the analytical and methodological aspects of urban design.Next to urban design competencies and skills, the candidate must show a strong academic commitment to both basic and applied research. An interest in research of societal relevance is important, as well as an interest to explore inter-disciplinary collaborations. The applicant must document scientific production within the research field as well as it is presupposed that the applicant has teaching experience.Job description as Associate Professor
The applicant will be part of an ambitious research and teaching environment. It is expected that the applicant will contribute to the knowledge production of the department by conduction and disseminating research. The position will contain teaching obligations in relation to programs related to urban design on both bachelors and master’s level, as well as administrative tasks related to the department.Your job responsibilities
As associate professor of Urban Designyou will contribute to the department’s research and teaching environment and to the faculty’s overall research strategy. You will contribute to the development of the department both independently and in collaboration with others via your research of high international quality. You ensure that your teaching maintains a high academic and didactic standard. You possess excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network which you can bring into play in your contribution to the academic development of Aalborg University and its profile both nationally and internationally.Your main tasks will consist of:
- Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
- Teaching and supervision of bachelor’s and master’s degree students and contribution to the development of new teaching activities.
- To contribute to the funding with the help of external research funding.
- Supervision of PhD students and contributing to the development of the faculty’s PhD courses.
- Involvement in assessment and committee work at Aalborg University.
- Dissemination of your research to the outside world.

You have established yourself with a prominent, independent research profile within of Urban Design field of research and possess documented solid research and teaching qualifications at a high international level, as well as you have experience with academic leadership tasks in a research group. You have broad international cooperative partnerships and experience of collaborations with private and public-sector organizations. At the same time, you have experience of applying for funding from national and international funding bodies. It is an advantage if you have stayed or been employed at one or more internationally recognized research institutions. As assistant professor of Urban Design your primary tasks will be research and research-based teaching. You will teach and supervise students at bachelor’s and master’s level, and you will contribute to the development of the department through research of the international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with both Danish and international colleagues.Your main tasks will consist of:
- Independent research of the highest international quality, including publication
- Teaching, guidance and examination of bachelor’s and master’s degree students, as well as possible supervision of PhD students.
- Some degree of contribution towards attracting external research funding.
You will report to the Head of Department Lone Malmborg.Your competences
You have independent research-related qualifications at international level and a PhD degree in Urban Design or a related field. You are a clear communicator, and you have some degree of experience of supervision and teaching at bachelor’s and master’s degree level. Completed pedagogical courses in supervision or similar will be a plus, as will experience with external research collaborations.
