MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024 “Energy-water nexus”

Company:

Job description

The research group Advanced Separation Processes belongs to the Chemical and Biomolecular Department of the University of Cantabria. The activity of the group aims at the research of cutting-edge techniques to contribute to the achievement of several sustainable development goals as defined in the UN 2030 agenda. The topics of interest are mainly focused on 1) promoting the energy transition towards a net zero economy by investigating new and renewable sources of energy such as the saline gradient power, and the production, storage and usage of hydrogen, and 2) protecting the environment and natural resources and, 3) promoting the transition to a circular economy in the industrial processes. The group’s objectives combine the generation of cutting-edge knowledge in the field of separation processes and photochemical reactions with the transfer of the created knowledge to end-users. The activity is supported by a good number of R&D projects with funding from national and international sources as detailed in the web site. Finaly, it is worth highlighting the commitment of the group’s academic staff in training human resources; in this line the group has supervised 70 PhD students and received 27 post-doc researchers. The scientist in charge is the Proffesor Inmaculada Ortiz Uribe with ORCID 0000-0002-3257-4821.Project descriptionThe Project will be part of the research activity aimed at promoting the energy-water nexus. Aware of the relevance of moving forward to a low carbon economy and the important role that hydrogen can play in the filed, one of the main challenges addresses the need to overcome the negative impact on fresh water abstraction with special emphasis on the countries that experience water stress or scarcity. Our group is involved in several R&D projects that aim at the development of cutting-edge methods and techniques to take advantage of the huge volume of seawater and use this water source to provide more sustainable energy sources. In particular the group currently takes part in the projects LIFE 3E and LIFE-INDESAL that aim at harnessing the energy released when two water streams of different saline concentration get in contact and transform this chemical potential to electrical energy by using

electromembranes under the configuration of reverse electrodialysis. Both projects are carried out with a strong collaboration with several R&D partners and companies including end-users. The results, so far achieved, highlight the potential of this renewable and clean energy source to enhance the sustainability of both the water industry (desalination companies) as in water reclamation (waste water treatment plants). Future research should address integration of this energy source in different applications searching for alternatives with minimum carbon footprint. Another line of interest, supported by the strateguc project S2H, aims at investigating the photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic water splitting. Starting form the ground-breaking concept the group has achieved the first interesting results showing the viability and stability of low-cost CdS-based semiconductors. Future research should focused on the research of high performance materials, process design, optimization and scale-up. So far the group follows a hybrid methodology that combines advanced process design and simulation with experimental evaluation in cutting-edge laboratory installations, to finally scale-up and evaluation in real-world sites.Applications: documents to be submitted and deadlinesApplicants should sent the following information to the projectcoordinator,1. Cv, highlighting the main achievements2. Letter of motivation,3. Up to 3 letters of reference4. 1 page proposal of the research activity usingThis information should be sent by August 15th, 2024 to the contact emails on top.Share this page
