Job description

The group Fluid Dynamic Technologies Group of Aragón Institute for Engineering Research welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) in 2024 at the University of Zaragoza.Brief description of the institution:The Aragón Institute for Engineering Research ( I3A) is a University Research Institute established by the University of Zaragoza more than 20 years ago. Its strengths include its capacity to bring together research from different engineering related areas and its highly qualified research staff able to interleave high standards in knowledge generation with transfer to the industry and society. Since it was first established, the I3A has grown both nationally and internationally, consolidated a shared vision among scientists and technical experts, and gained recognition as reference in a larger variety fields of engineering research. Its four strategic divisions, Biomedical Engineering, Information and Communication Technologies, Processes and Recycling, and Industrial Technologies, work for a common objective which is to generate and transfer knowledge to the social and business environment.9 cutting edge laboratories were recently launched to reinforce, bring together and make visible the lines of work of its 34 research groups in areas considered key: Circular Economy Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, virtual & artificial reality, personalized medicine, home appliance technology, photonics and smart cities. The I3A holds 7 ERC grants in biomedical engineering and ICT , 3 MSCA DN have been recently granted in the call 2022 and 3 MSCA PF in the last call. The University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR) is a public university and the major research and higher education institution in the Spanish region of Aragón. UNIZAR has been involved in more than 340 EU projects between 2014 and 2023, participates in 18 ITN, 10 IF, 12 RISE, 2 COFUND, 3 EU Researchers’ Night, 1 MSCA and Citizens, 6 MSCA – DN and 10 MSCA- PF of Horizon EuropeFor more information, please visit:Brief description of the Research GroupIn the Fluid Dynamic Technologies Group we use advanced numerical methods for the simulation of fluid flow, heat transfer and chemical reaction in environmental, biological and industrial flows. The Group’s activities are in very diverse fields, such as weather prediction, the transport of pollutants in the atmospheric boundary layer and in water bodies, the risks posed by sea waves and river swells, the design and optimisation of industrial or household equipment, and the fluid flow in living organisms. The group is multidisciplinary in nature: its researchers have backgrounds in Engineering, Mathematics and Physics; and they are specialised in multiple numerical tools (such as finite elements, finite volumes, Lagrangian methods, Montecarlo methods, lattice Boltzmman, artificial intelligence and reduced order models, among others).

Brief description of the project:This project aims to investigate the complex relationships between surface flow connectivity, hydrodynamic hierarchy, and runoff intermittency in small catchments using cutting-edge hyper-resolution 2D shallow water modelling. Building on the SERGHEI model framework, this research will leverage high-performance computing to simulate runoff generation and surface flow in first-order catchments at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. The project will focus on characterizing both static and dynamic connectivity features of entire catchments, including the hierarchy of geomorphological elements such as streams, hillslopes, and floodplains. By exploring the use of novel metrics derived from these simulations, this research will shed light on the time-dependent signatures of intermittency and its relationships with hydrodynamic and hydrological features of runoff events. This research is a collaborative effort between researchers from Germany (Forschungszentrum Jülich) and Italy (Università della Calabria), ensuring a rich exchange of expertise and knowledge in the fields of hydrology, geomorphology, and high-performance computing. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a diverse team of experts and to advance our understanding of surface flow connectivity and hydrodynamic hierarchy in small catchments.Research Objectives:Develop and apply hyper-resolution 2D shallow water modelling to simulate runoff generation and surface flow in small catchmentsCharacterize static and dynamic connectivity features of the entire catchment, including the hierarchy of geomorphological elementsAnalyze intermittency and its relation to hydrodynamic and hydrological features of runoff eventsCollaborate with project partners to advance our understanding of surface flow connectivity and hydrodynamic hierarchy in small catchmentsExpected Outcomes:Advanced understanding of surface flow connectivity and hydrodynamic hierarchy in small catchmentsDevelopment of novel metrics to characterize intermittency and its relation to hydrodynamic and hydrological features of runoff eventsContribution to the development of the SERGHEI model frameworkFor a correct evaluation of your candidature, please send the documents below to Mario Morales ( ) :
