Imperial College London invites applications for a Mechanical Workshop Technician to work in the Particle Physics Mechanical Workshop to contribute to the ongoing research activities of the Community.Particle Physics is the study of the fundamental building blocks of nature and the forces holding them together. The Particle Physics Community has an international reputation for advancing the field and members lead many of the current and future international experiments addressing basic questions about matter and energy at CERN (Geneva) and other locations both in the UK and around the world.The Particles Mechanical Workshop provides support services to the research programme of the Particles community, which consists of around 200 members, comprising 24 academics, 54 research staff and 52 PhD students, plus additional support staff and academic visitors.As part of a team of three technical staff you will be responsible for providing mechanical engineering design and manufacturing services to Particles research staff and collaborators. You will be a proficient machinist expected to manufacture components and contribute to the assembly, installation and commissioning of equipment which forms apparatus used for research. This is an open-ended position available immediately.This position is based at South Kensington, but some occasional UK and foreign travel may be required.The Particle Physics Community’s strategy for leadership in designing, constructing, and exploiting scientifically the leading experiments in particle physics sustains our high international profile. The Community has a strong ongoing experimental programme encompassing the T2K, Super-Kamiokande and future Hyper-Kamiokande experiments in Japan; the short baseline neutrino programme at Fermilab, the future neutrino oscillation experiment DUNE at Fermilab and SURF in the USA; the search for charged lepton flavour violation with COMET in Japan; the CMS and LHCb experiments at the LHC; the search for dark matter with the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment in the USA and the future XLZD experiment; the Atom Interferometer Observatory and Network (AION) project in the UK and the USA; Antimatter spectroscopy, MICE, SHiP activities and the development of future experiments and impact through the application of particle physics technologies.
