Vacancy: Mechanical TechnicianLocation: Billingham, UKJob Family: General EngineeringAs the Mechanical Technician, you will provide mechanical support in the maintenance, operation and development of new and existing research engineering and associated utility equipment, spanning multiple Sectors and Business Units across Teesside and 3rd party sites.Mechanical Technician support encompasses activities including maintenance, safety critical equipment inspections, construction, modification, commissioning, troubleshooting and optimisation of bespoke pilot and research engineering equipment and associated infrastructure ensuring EHS, legislative and quality system compliance.Johnson Matthey, a FTSE 250 organisation, is a global leader in sustainable technologies specialising in catalysis, precious metal products, chemicals and process technology. You can be part of that success story.Your responsibilities:Maintaining and repairing existing installations to sustain equipment effectiveness and reliability, developing and working to standardised work procedures in support of preventative maintenance programmes. Timely and detailed recording of information as input into safety, maintenance, and operations KPIs.Specifying, procuring, and monitoring critical spares and consumable equipment to support preventative maintenance programmes and repairs.Fabricating, constructing and commissioning bespoke pilot engineering equipment to facilitate delivery of business-critical research and manufacturing programmes. Responsible for ensuring equipment installations meet site and statutory specification.Performing compliance testing of new and existing pilot and research engineering and utility equipment, including safety critical system inspection and calibration to meet the requirements of company safety policy, legislative guidelines, and quality requirements. Responsible for the sign-off and recording of inspection test records.Diagnosing and troubleshooting non-optimal equipment performance and to work alongside customers to implement efficient and robust solutions.Providing training, validation, and guidance to the customer in the safe use and operation of key engineering equipment and in the safe execution of safety critical Engineering Tasks.Planning and prioritising assigned work tasks, to manage customer and employee expectations and to deliver safely within time and budget.Identification of risks and issues which may affect schedule, budget, or quality. Contribute to continuous improvement programmes and root cause analyses in collaboration with the R&D and engineering teams following robust change management.Requirements for the role:Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship as Engineering Technician or similar, or equivalent experience in the Chemical or Manufacturing Industry with demonstrable job specific skillsKnowledge, skills, and attitude to resolve discipline specific plant problems autonomously, managing own workloadExperience working in a research, pilot plant or laboratory scale operating environments, which are subject to change (Desirable)Practical experience of fitting and modifying small bore tubing systems (Desirable)Understands process safety management and the framework to achieving process safety (such as management of change) (Desirable)
Experience of LEAN manufacturing methodology, including problem solving tools such as root cause analysis.
