Mathematics PhD Studentships
University College London
About us The Department of Mathematics at UCL is an internationally renowned department within one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Since its beginning, mathematics at UCL has been enhanced by its many outstanding members of staff. Indeed, two of its students (and later staff) Professor Klaus Roth (1958) and Professor Alan Baker (1970) have gone on to win the Fields Medal. Another former member of staff Professor Tim Gowers won the Fields Medal in 1998 for work he did whilst at UCL.Since 2011, the department has grown considerably, with many academic and honorary staff members, including fellows of the Royal Society. The department also has a lot of postdoctoral research fellows. We welcome a regular stream of distinguished visiting academics from home and abroad. The broad range of research interests is reflected in the wide choice of courses available in the third and fourth years of the degree programmes, from spectral theory, groups and geometry to fluid mechanics and from mathematical ideas in biology to cosmology. Research funding in the department from EPSRC, ERC, Leverhulme Trust and the Wellcome Trust has grown significantly in recent years, with an increase of 70% in total funding since 2011.About the role Studentship Description: The project will develop a digital twin of an experimental 3D microvascular organoid culture system working in collaboration with Dr Paola Campagnolo (School of Biosciences, University of Surrey).Specifically, individual-based computational simulations will be used to investigate the role of mechanical interactions between cells in haemorrhagic disease. The digital twin will be an accurate biological mimic that is user-friendly within an experimental context; optimised for co-culture microvascular organoids. The combined digital twin and experimental organoid system will constitute a powerful tool for investigating new treatments for these severe diseases without the use of animal models. The student will also spend time in the lab of the experimental collaborator (Campagnolo lab), learning wet-lab techniques and performing experiments that will contribute to data collection for the simulations.
Person Specification Applicants should possess a Masters level degree in Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science or similar physical sciences/bioengineering backgrounds, or an equivalent qualification from other countries. An essential criterion is a willingness to engage with biological detail.Application Process: £21237 per year
