This is a post for a Locum Consultant Vascular Surgeon, to cover a vacant post. This is a 12 month post. The successful applicant will join the rota to make 6 whole time equivalent consultants.The Department of Vascular Surgery is a service line with in the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Cluster, which incorporates 2 x wards, Cardiac Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit and has a programme for Advanced Nurse Practitioners as part of the team. The departmental group of services have an annual budget of over £16m.Main duties of the jobEach Vascular Surgeon has one full day of operating per week and access to half day lists for ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy of varicose veins.We have a dedicated Vascular theatre for elective and emergency procedures.About usDerriford Hospital, Plymouth is the major trauma centre for the South West peninsula.We perform all types of elective and emergency Vascular Surgery including:

  • Carotid surgery (urgent and elective),
  • Complex aortic surgery for aneurysms and occlusive disease (open and endovascular including thoraco-abdominal aneurysm repair with cardiac bypass),
  • Upper and lower limb bypass including distal bypass,
  • Renal transplant (deceased and live donor),
  • Cervical and first rib resection for thoracic outlet syndrome and axillary vein thrombosis,
  • Thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis and digital ischaemia sympathectomy,
  • Renal access surgery (fistula),
  • Venous procedure

Job responsibilitiesThe flexible job plan facilitates optimum usage of the facilities equally by all consultants.The successful applicant will be undertaking outpatient clinics, theatres, Interventional Radiology session and MDT once a week.The successful applicant will have one full day operating session on a six week schedule.The post holder will be expected to contribute towards the directorates teaching and audit responsibilities. Attendance at regular CME and morbidity/mortality meetings is considered essential.The post holder must participate in CPD activities to meet the requirements of revalidation.WorkloadThis is a 10.25 PA post which incorporates 1.5 SPAs. Flexibility in association with service needs will be required within an annualised framework. The appointee will be expected to support clinical colleagues in offering a comprehensive vascular surgery service. The job plan may be altered in the future in consultation with colleagues, clinical director and medical director.Person Specification
Education, qualifications and special training
Essential

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or entry expected with 6 months of the interview date if currently an SpR/StR)

Desirable

  • Qualification in teaching

Particular skills and experience
Essential

  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on a range of both elective and emergency problems in vascular surgery
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Expertise in vascular surgery and two years’ experience in a vascular surgery unit or an equivalent
  • Expertise in carotid, aortic and bypass surgery
  • Endovascular skills

Desirable

  • Renal access experience
  • Endovascular fellowship

Research & clinical audit
Essential

  • Ability and enthusiasm in research Commitment to audit of outcomes
  • Research degree (MD or PhD)
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.

Desirable

  • Ability to act as PI in research trials

Teaching
Essential

  • Ability to teach clinical and operative skills effectively and with enthusiasm.
  • This particular post requires the applicant to undertake teaching of postgraduate/undergraduate medical students.
  • Experience of postgraduate teaching (HEE / Royal college approved courses)

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates preferably with a teaching qualification

Communication & Interpersonal skills
Essential

  • Ability to work as a team, critical approach to work, caring attitude to patients, ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other allied staff, honesty and probity

Desirable

  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at a local and regional level

Management
Essential

  • Ability to effectively manage a surgical firm and work within a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

  • Experience of audit and management and IT skills

Practical requirements
Essential

  • An ability to undertake the physical and mental demands of a busy tertiary vascular post and to be flexible in providing on call work.

Successfully completed an ATLS and CCrISP course
Essential

  • To be on the appropriate GMC Specialist Register or eligible for admission within six months of interview.
